Busy day over Chat Moss this Sunday with 51 VT services scheduled to pass through Eccles in total (Preston and Liverpool diversions).

There will be the opportunity to travel between Manchester Piccadilly and Liverpool Lime Street on a Class 390 with departures from Liverpool at 09:41, 10:43 and then hourly to 18:43. Piccadilly departures are at 11:22 12:22, 13:22, 14:21, 15:21, 16:22, 17:22, 18:22, 19:15, 20:17, 21:17 and 22:20.

Sustained 90mph running should be possible providing there is nothing too close ahead.

According to Northern Rail a 319 ran to Wigan this morning, anyone see it/snap it?

Does it look therefore as if this 0600 LIV-WGN 319 is going to run every Sat morning up to timetable changeover on the 17th or are there likely to be more?

It's easier to take pics if we know when they are running.....

It is. LLS is Llanishen

Not wishing to get too much off topic, but can anyone explain the derivation of St. Helens Central - SNH - (originally St Helens Shaw Street) the Junction station is pretty obvious, being SHJ ?

Well SHC is Streethouse, so that one has gone. I think that they are generally the best fit they can get but sometimes the letters just have to be whatever is available, e.g. ZFD - Farringdon.

The derivation could be that BR kept the SNH St Helens Shaw Street, code rather than changing to a new code to avoid confusion, or SHC code may not have been available, SHC is currently used for the code for Streethouse which opened in 1992 5 years after the St Helens Central name change.

Does it matter anyway. If airports the world over have obscure initials because the same letters have been used elsewhere, (maybe after some great national hero who is unknown outside that country) then I'm sure that those who are savvy enough to remember the ones that they use a lot will be able to accept what the travel industry docs/websites tell them.

Isn't ZFD subtly different though, in that all NR locations that are actually LU owned stations start with a Z. So Z is not really part of the code, it's more of a prefix, with the two other letters being completely logical:

ZBB Barbican
ZCH Chorleywood
ZFD Farringdon
ZHH Harrow-on-the-Hill
ZHI Highbury and Islington
ZMG Moorgate
ZRI Rickmansworth
ZWB West Brompton

Ooh dear, what have I started ? !!

The only thing I can think of is that it was constructed something like this -

SaiNtHelens

Wouldn't like to be in Ware, though........

Caught at last !

The 0600 Lime St - Wigan NW diagram (which carries on to join the airport service). Today's unit was 319362 'Northern Powerhouse'.

Dave (LDECRexile) and myself boarded (and alighted on the return trip) at St Helens Central.

Apparently this is the only electric service on this route until the timetable changeover on the 17th.

These shots were taken on my phone camera but there is more material to follow once Dave has edited it.

It's a lot easier to read posts with the full name. We're not all station geeks!

I would appreciate if you attributed the quote to the correct person as I did not write that! Likewise, don't assume people who come on here are "station geeks" either!:(

Shame Northern put a Tory mantra on a train that way. At least they stopped short of "Long Term Economic Plan" or "Competence not Chaos".

As Paul has already mentioned we travelled on the 06:29 St Helens Central to Wigan NW and return this morning.

I also went out and about to Edge Hill and Allerton Depot yesterday.

I've put the photos Paul took with a camera on his album here:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/127646831@N03/sets/72157649792560381/

I've put all the photos we took with cameras onto the Combined Volume here:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/127646831@N03/sets/72157648494725811/

I'll add the photos Paul took this morning with his mobile phone into both albums in due course, but you have access to them in his post above.

I've got company coming so I'll have to do this and write the captions later, maybe not until Monday or Tuesday.

EDIT:

I've had a brief window of opportunity and added one of Paul's mobile phone shots to his album and to the Combined Volume. Two of the others were very similar to ones already processed and the fourth, of me, has had a good airing on this site.

As far as I am aware, the first powered Pendolino Passenger service on the whole L&M route was in the hands of 390141 "City of Chester" passed Whiston Station @ 09.55hrs on 1A12 09.41hrs Liverpool Lime St - London Euston. Behind that train @ 10.06hrs was 390043 "Virgin Explorer" on 5P16, 09.30hrs Edge Hill IC Depot to Preston ECS.

Hopefully, got the Pendo numbers right but watching the Pendo's go pass was a little strange to say the least.

3 late from Liverpool, 11 early over Chat Moss, only to lose it all on the Castlefield corridor, 5 late from Piccadilly.
The culprit was a late-running ATW service which was turned round at Oxford Road to head back to Milford Haven.
This first westbound to Liverpool (1F01) is passing the time of day (20 minutes booked) at Stockport.

The first Class 390 Virgin Pendolino passing through Wavertree Technology Park this morning. I hope passengers reading the announcement signage don't think these are the new trains they are getting on the 17th May 2015!

390137? pass Whiston Station @ 13.53hrs on 1A44 13.43hrs Lime St - Euston with 390153 passing a minute later with 1F05 10.14hrs Euston - Lime St. Passed each other in the cutting between station and Cumber Lane Bridge.

In the meantime, learnt something new, chatted to driver of Airport - Lime St train while stopping at Whiston Station advising Pendo up his backside, then noted the double yellow "flashing" signal (HN309), driver advised me that it meant he had to cross over to the 'slow" road at the Huyton Junction so it allowed "Pendo" to pass him on the fast line. Never noted the signal doing that before so as I've said learnt somthing new!
