Anyone know anything about a path from Birkenhead Depot to Newport on Monday?

[A link to Realtime Trains for 5Q78 0611 Birkenhead North E.M.U.D to Newport Docks (Simsgroup) departing on 29th January 2024].

There are no inbound loco paths from what I can see?

The loco might already be there, or have arrived today.

Nope not arrived, only need to check RTT for that. All other previous occasions, loco tends to arrive L/E early morning on the day. Also to consider if loco arrives early, then driver needs to be transported back home or overnight stay or two, added expense for ROG.

Border line closed this weekend for engineering works, bus replacement Bidston to Wrexham and Shrewsbury to Wrexham

The path was cancelled this morning, presumably as no other units have been withdrawn yet (at least to my knowledge).

Welcome to Rail Uk
Not wise to withdraw anything else now. The 777s really need to become more reliable between now and the timetable change in early June, when the last of these finally bow out after four-odd decades.

Thank you @Jamesrob637

I have heard that the current plans are for the final 507s to be withdrawn following the farewell tour planned in May, so I definitely agree that the 777s reliability needs to improve (though there seems to have been an uplift in performance with the 777/1s on the Headbolt Lane line over the past couple of days). However, the 507s have caused quite a few issues with their reliability and availability as well recently. There are a couple of units that have been awaiting maintenance for quite a while (002 springs to mind - has it been fixed yet?).

I think some people are too quick to jump to the assumption that every breakdown and availability issue at present is caused by the newer trains, and seem to be forgetting that the 40-year-old trains are quite likely to be suffering now.

Nobody has denied the 50x fleet is no longer as reliable as it was, but the facts speak for themselves. The MTIN figures which were posted in this thread recently has the 777s at 504 and the 50x at 5,843, a vast difference. While they're not the only units in the fleet which fail, the 777s do make up the majority of failures at present. Availability problems are primarily because too many 508s were scrapped too soon, many of those units had years of mileage left before their next overhaul would have been due, these would have undoubtedly helped to alleviate the current situation. No, the 777s aren't entirely to blame for everything, but they have to take a significant portion of it.

If my car only went 504 miles between failures, I'd have quickly disposed of it! 17000 miles in my possession and only a flat battery yesterday caused by my running a hoover too long without putting the actual engine on

Unfortunately, you disposing of your car in such circumstances wouldn't solve the underlying problem of the car being unreliable. It just wouldn't be your problem any more.

Any takers out there for a fleet of unreliable third rail units?

Do I take it that a 507 on Chesters is still pretty much normal? Yesterday I had a rather grimy 507031, and I heard (but didn't see) one out on Sunday.

If the expectation still stands that the 507s will be withdrawn following the farewell tour (early May), we only have approximately 14 weeks left with the units. I suspect we'll be seeing the 507s going to Newport at roughly the same rate as the 508s did over the previous months (about 1 scrap move every 2 weeks). Merseyrail have 22 507s currently in service (including 013 and 032) so a scrap move every 2 weeks would take them roughly up to the end of June, which would tie in with the intentions of withdrawing on or just after the tour (still having a few spare units around just incase)..

There are 21 Class 507s left: 001/2/3/7/10/1/4/5/6/7/8/20/1/3/8/9/30/1/3 in addition to withdrawn 013/32. I've heard a report that they are expected to continue for a few more weeks beyond the farewell tour as things stand.

Ah yes, there are 21, I forgot 004 departed on the most recent scrap move, all the attention was on the 508s.

A huge thanks for this Dave. This was very useful as it enabled me to time my weekly trip to Chester so I had 507016, an excellent unit in fine form, in both directions. Two thoroughly enjoyable journeys on my second favourite 507.

I would agree, very helpful having the allocation info. Managed to get a few rides on the Chester line recently thanks to Daves info!

016 was in very fine form yesterday and the heating was excellent, very welcome in the cold weather.

507 016 on Chesters again today, on 845 circuit from Chester

Also an ecs has run from Southport to Birkenhead North depot this morning, it would appear to be 507 030 as that was shunting on the depot as I passed on the next train behind it. I dont think they could have hidden another one away in such little time after arriving. The only other 507 outside the depot was 031 which has subsequently headed out to West Kirby as 5T65

Additionally as at 10.45 both 507 001 and 002 are stabled in sidings at New Brighton

507 033 has just gone onto Kirkdale Depot after arriving on 5T64 from Southport. It was in service on the Southport line this morning

It came back out from Kirkdale as 5T69 just after 12, ran back up to Southport and coupled up to 017 (after being put in the wrong platform and having to go out again!) For another 6 car at 13.12

507 003 followed in next and will form the 13.27 from Southport.

There is now also a 5T72 heading from Kirkdale to Southport too, this is a 6 car set one half of which is 020. I didn't get the other unit though

Surely they won’t be allocated to the Wirral for much longer?
