It was the first to be refurbished but in fact 508142 and 143 were the first 508s to arrive from the Southern Region, whilst 508103 (IIRC) was the first 508 in Merseytravel/Reggie Rail colours; 507013 was the first of all in the new house colours in the autumn of 1991.
Yes. They arrived at the back end of 1982, I assume for clearance testing and type training (can't imagine it was a long course).

There are more 507s than 508s in service so this isn't surprising. I've definitely had more 507s than 508s on my Southport line commutes over the years, too.
Over the past two days I have covered the whole network on both classes. I expected it to be more of a challenge to cover everything on a 508 but actually the 507s proved to be harder to track down on some routes, e.g. today only one of the four New Brighton diagrams was a 507. The grounding of the 777s was a bonus as it enabled me to to the Kirkby line.

508114 has rather loud motors; it has been on the Ormskirk line. Climbing the grade from Moorfields to Sandhills is especially good. The rush hour Chester trains are very full again, out of Liverpool and Chester. Southbound trains are full and standing to Bromborough.

Best to put withdrawals on hold for a bit following the grounding of the 777s.

Some of the class 508s are getting low on miles. They could just do the overhaul and put it to the back of the scrap queue. Class 507s were/are still being overhauled so I'm not sure why the 508s are not.

How many diagrams are there now? It used to be something like 53 diagrams for 59 units but there are only 53 units left now.

I’m pretty sure somewhere in another thread it was mentioned that the 508s have some corrosion issues that were worse than the 507s m. Hence why it was chosen just to them

Class 507s are in better condition. One reason the 508s are more low on miles is where they refurbished first in 2003/04 before 507s in 2004/5 respectively, meaning 508s more low miles, This could be also a be reason.

I was on the footbridge across the sidings earlier today. 507032 looks like it hasn’t moved in two weeks either, since I was last there. With the Sunday possession, all of the sidings are fully occupied.
507 032 is out today (28th february) on New Brightons. Just had it on the 13.31 ex Moorfields.

Not in the best condition, set of doors out of use in the rear coach and the pa is goosed in the centre coach.

On other news 008 is STILL enjoyably loud :D

Also everything departing northbound from the hunts cross platform at Moorfields during the current engineering works for a bit of variety

Best wishes

Was on a unit yesterday (didn't take notice of 507 or 508, let alone unit number :) ) but the poor thing felt a bit knackered. Lots of sway, and also riding very badly from Leeds St Jnc to Sandhills. Felt like the suspension was bottoming out.

As above, only Platform 1 in use at Moorfields. Trains departing in the down direction using the Up Southport then switch back over at Leeds St Jn (just after the incline out of the tunnels flattens out) - nice to be part of a (reasonably) unusual movement.

A few of them are rough, most are fine. The bad ones bottom out on the jointed track heading north into Sandhills.

Honestly, I can't remember which one I was on recently, think it was a 508, but it's started to bottom out so hard, it bounces back up like a Pacer. Some passengers probably ended up having some horrible flashbacks.

Employee ballot went out for Builder Plates, I managed to get one from
The A car of 508123. Made up to have a bit of history.
Now I need to find something strong enough to hold it up!

Whilst I saved seldom few of my documents from the late 70's on, I believe 023 had not arrived on the SR from York works by 10th Feb 1980 (I will stand corrected) as it was not amongst those awaiting entry to service and stabled at Basingstoke, Strawberry Hill or Wimbledon depot's on that date. However by 23rd Feb it was amongst those on East Wimbledon depot. Hope that's of some interest.

I'm sure someone out there will have a list of individual delivery dates, other than 001 being delivered to Strawberry Hill on 9 Aug 79 and the second unit being due on 22 Aug, but not I a-lass !

From the Mersey Railways 2.0 group on Facebook, seems 507019 & 508122 will be the next two off to Sims a week tomorrow, 19/3/23.

A 507? That's a surprise!
That unit was involved in an incident at the start of Feb this year near Cressington where passengers had to be evacuated along the track. 019 was only overhauled last year as well so still had plenty of mileage left.

Saturday: 122 on Southport line today. I shall keep my eyes open for it!

Monday: 508122 is on Ormskirk services today for anybody wishing to photograph or catch a final ride onboard it.

Do we know whether the move to sims will happen from Kirkdale or Birkenhead this time? Presumably kirkdale considering 508122 is there already, unsure of 507019 location.

I've been told 122 is currently at West Kirby, it was moved there to keep it out of the way until Sunday.

Just been to West Kirby, only one unit in the sidings, 508103
It has been moved to the Depot now, a Stadler engineer informed me that it had been temporarily moved to West Kirby overnight and then moved to Birkenhead Depot where it will be stripped ready for the move on Sunday.
