Well, frankly, they're stupid. It looks nothing like Bolton and it doesn't say Bolton on the signs.

Not everyone on a train is a train spotter and knows exactly where they are. Have you never made a mistake with an organisation you have dealings with?

That wasn't what I meant, I just don't see how it can be even remotely confused with Bolton. I know a lot of commuters always get the same train, but differing stopping patterns are hardly new.

Well, I've never been to Bolton, so I wouldn't know I wasn't there if the PIS or whatever on the train told me I was there. There's no point having PIS systems if passengers cannot rely on the information that is being given. It is in times of disruption that it needs to be accurate. Assuming its the PIS that has misdirected the passengers, of course.

Back in the days of old Farnworth tunnel (when the line speed dipped from 75 to 60 on approach) you'd commonly see people leaping to their feet for Bolton as the driver braked for the reduction in speed even though Bolton was still a good 4-5 minutes away. Not everyone grasps that it and Salford Crescent are actually quite far apart, especially if you've not been paying attention to your surroundings (e.g. reading)

Very few of Northern's units have any form of PIS, so it sounds to me like people just getting up at the first station after Salford Crescent. If any of them got left on the platform they must have had their eyes shut as the nameboards are clear enough. (They haven't always been - it was lacking any for quite a long time).

Doubt it, the damage is unlikely to be that severe. The bomb, while devastating largely due to the amount of shrapnel in it, was not large.

The main question will surely be whether the station bridge (and access to the arena) is damaged.
If so you've lost 3 out of 4 through platforms (4-6) until it is fixed.
At the very least the glazing panels will probably need replacing.
Non-stopping (eg freight) movements might start first.

You still have the footbridge at the east end (I think) which is links platform 3 with 4,5 and 6.
As seen in the photo that I have attached.
The second photo also shows a comparison between the main footbridge and the one at the far end.

Yes, and there's another to the west, but these are unsatisfactory for heavy passenger use (narrow, unsheltered etc).
The lifts are also integral to the arena bridge.

The footbridge that I am referring to is certainly not narrow there is also a difference between unsatisfactory and unacceptable, if in the short term the footbridge is out of use and that was the only one available it certainly would not be the end of the world. I imagine the vast majority of people would be happier using that than having to use Rail Replacement Buses.

Victoria remains closed

Manchester Victoria station is still part of an ongoing police investigation. The station has also suffered structural damage that still needs to be properly assessed and repaired. Until this work is completed the station will remain closed. Please continue to check this page for further updates.

Trains will not run to / from and through Manchester Victoria. Trains will be diverted, cancelled or start / terminate at alternative stations.

Advice for Northern customers:

The following key Northern routes will be impacted this weekend in the Greater Manchester area:

Saturday 27 May

Huddersfield – Manchester Victoria: Trains will start and terminate at Stalybridge. Alternative train services run between Stalybridge and Manchester Piccadilly. Passengers using Ashton-under-Lyne should use Metrolink services into and out of Manchester.
Leeds – Manchester Victoria: Trains will start and terminate at Rochdale. A replacement bus service will run between Rochdale and Manchester Piccadilly calling at all intermediate stations.
Blackburn - Manchester Victoria via Todmorden: These services will not run.
Liverpool Lime Street – Manchester Victoria: Trains will start and terminate at Manchester Oxford Road.
Southport – Manchester Airport: These services will start and terminate at Manchester Piccadilly and run to Southport via Atherton calling additionally at Swinton, Moorside, Walkden, Atherton, Hagfold, Daisy Hill and Ince.
Kirkby – Manchester Victoria: Trains will start and terminate at Salford Central.
All current rail improvement work will continue as planned. No replacement bus services will call at Manchester Victoria and will instead terminate at Salford Central.

Sunday 28 May and Monday 29 May

Huddersfield – Manchester Victoria: Trains will start and terminate at Stalybridge. Alternative train services run between Stalybridge and Manchester Piccadilly. Passengers using Ashton-under-Lyne should use Metrolink services into and out of Manchester.
Leeds – Manchester Victoria: Trains will start and terminate at Rochdale. A replacement bus service will run between Rochdale and Manchester Piccadilly calling at all intermediate stations.
Clitheroe – Manchester Victoria: Trains will run between Clitheroe and Blackburn only. Connections can be made at Blackburn onto alternative transport towards Manchester.
Due to pre-planned route improvement work on the Ordsall Chord other train services were not scheduled to be calling at Manchester Victoria. Buses scheduled to stop at Manchester Victoria will terminate at Salford Crescent on Sunday and Salford Central on Monday.

It's not simple though! It's confusing to people to stop at a station that usually has (effectivley) no service. Some people almost got off there thinking it was Bolton. There is a huge capacity crunch because of the displaced rolling stock and myriad cancelled services, and almost every train through Castlefield Jn today all day has been late. Stopping at a station that nobody uses, or doubling the service at tiny halts in the Lancashire countryside for the sake of 'simplicity' is a waste of everyone's time. It hasn't even been advertised!
Its not confusing. It will take more time to produce a plan with different trains past each hour different things. The timetable has to be rewritten - it needs to be kept simple to be able to get the job done with as few mistakes as possible. All trains to a particular destination call all stations - simple. Everyone knows what's going on. You start making it more complicated people start making errors. It would be nice to work out a timetable that would normally take two years to produce in a single night - but it ain't gonna happen.

Northern need to change their website to advise of the possible structural damage in their opening message about the incident.
It appears on another page regarding bank holiday travel arrangements. It is not obvious.

In all probability, they do not know what the damage may be, as they will not have been allowed access by the police.

This weekend is also when relatives of the victims have, I understand, been told by police that they can come to view the bomb site, if they so wish and it helps them through this difficult time..

Luckily the stops have all been removed as of Friday - there was never a reason to stop there. Of course it's confusing to call additionally at a station the vast majority of passengers didn't know existed. There's also no need for any of these services to call at Ince as long as there's an all-stations Salford Crescent - Wigan Wallgate, which there was during the week.

Well, obviously they've had time to look at and refine the plan. I imagine they could have taken the stops out earlier, but once a plan has gone out it can't really be changed unless you can be sure that everyone in possession of the plan has been made aware.

It look like Northern have been given permission to move trains that been stuck at Victoria station since Monday night as going off real train times website it show movement of train code 5T01, 5T02 and 5T03 leaving Victoria to Newton Heath depot this afternoon.

Traksy map certainly shows the headcodes that were in the station last week aren't.

Will that mean that the assessment on any possible structural damage has now been fully completed?

I would be pleasantly surprised if it was more than a rough estimate after a first look. It appears that Northern have only had access to the station for a few hours.

The set down in the turnback siding will likely be a 319 that should have gone back to Liverpool on Tuesday morning. I suspect it might be more difficult to move an EMU if there is damage to the OLE or work/structural assessments are being done to the roof of the station, bearing in mind that the city room where the explosion took place is directly above platforms 3-6.
