IIRC when the Metro first opened to Newcastle Airport there was a non-stop Tynemouth to Airport service, not sure how long it lasted mind!
It might have been quite quick. The distance between stops on the Metro is very small indeed.

Speaking of the Metro, I wouldn't mind seeing some services routed along the old route (presumably with major modifications to the main line) and into Newcastle Central itself. This would be to increase capacity through the City tunnel from Jesmond onwards, thus allowing a new short-cut line to open, giving capacity for the Blyth and Tyne extension. Complicated and probably impossible, but one can dream.
You mean, other than serving all of the places on the Calder Vale line between Leeds and Manchester?
So, what, you'd withdraw them and leave intermediate stations with no service?
London to Paris stopper would be canny
no, this'd be in conjunction with a proper 'metro' service around leeds operating as well. So instead of Leeds-Victoria you'd have
Leeds-Todmorden (some new stations)
New Wortley
Armley Moor
Bramley
New Pudsey
Laisterdyke
Bowling
Low Moor
Hipperholme
Halifax
Sowerby Bridge
Mytholmroyd
Hebden Bridge
Todmorden
with a similar service operating through the proposed Bradford Crossrail to Skipton or Ilkley.
plus a similar service into Bradford, a service via Brighouse, Elland & Deighton to Huddersfield and the existing Blackpool service. Assuming half-hourly intervals you'd have a service pattern of:
Halifax: 5tph Leeds, 1 fast; 5tph Bradford, 1 fast; 4tph Huddersfield
Sowerby Bridge, Mytholmroyd, Hebden Bridge: 2tph Leeds, 2tph Bradford
there'd then presumably be a similar stopper into Victoria going the other way out of Todmorden, possibly the proposed Burnley M Rd-Victoria stopping service.
A return to Transpennine trains serving Sunderland and a return to a 02.10 Newcastle - Manchester would be canny.
Also an all night service on the ECML between Edinburgh and London to give a 24 hour service including an ECML sleeper.
Oh and if we can go back to fantasy land, a Wagon-Lits sleeper from London Victoria to Paris using a train ferry giving a more civilised route to the Continent!
Take it this is a thing of the past.......?
It is indeed, the last train to York is the 22:43 EC service to York calling Durham, Darlington, Northallerton and York terminating there at 00:12. The next train isn't until 04:40 when the EC service to Kings Cross calling Durham, Darlington, Northallerton and York arriving at 05:57.
the tpe services to sunderland should never have been stopped in the first place, sunderland should have a lot more services than what it presently has !!
I lived in York and worked in Newcastle in the late 90s. On a Friday night, ATN used to run a 01.40 something from Newcastle to York. It was a stopper and usually a Pacer very full of drunk people! It was excellent for the end of a good night out.

Progress - not! Must have been a money maker!
IIRC it was to do with giving the Metro their paths, its a pity as it was much better going to the match on a non-stop service in 1st from Newcastle!
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
a service long gone, it was latterley run by TPE as a 02.10 to Manchester Airport. Quite what those passengers boarding after York going on holiday thought of the pools of blood, vomit and wee, the smells and pizza boxes and kebab wrappers!

probably more hassle than it was worth. I miss that train all the same, it was well useful!
Was there not a plan to re-lay this line recently ? i.e. was it included in a Railtrack RUS strategy ?the return of "The Delph Donkey".

How about extending some of the TPE Manchester - Newcastles to Edinburgh?
Going back to the Metro, I'd like a service to the Airport via Monument, starting at South Hylton.
