Station pubs (part two?)

I didn't mind the food when I was dragged into one by a friend, but my goodness it was extortionate.

Some may have better menus than others to be fair. I called in one a few weeks ago and ordered a “dog” (or was it a dawg?) out of desperation and lived to regret it. It was pretty terrible, in fact I was left feeling violated!

Have we mentioned the micro-pub (with a lovely beer garden) in the old coal yard immediately adjacent to Dunbar station? Not actually on the current station premises....but very much on former railway property.

Not quite on a station, but in The Arches under Wigan North Western, just 4 arches along from Wigan Central, the owners of Hideout Coffee Shop and Wine Bar have opened (today) Arch 6 Beer Hangar. Craft, continental and American beer.

Can't see any mention of the Oxford Road Tap in Manchester, which I am informed by a friend opened last week in the former cycle shed on the station approach. Four handpumps plus craft beers and a very natty wooden ceiling.

I understand that it's run by the same group as the other "... Tap" bars in stations.

It's the same owners as the Piccadilly Tap and Victoria Tap in Manchester but I'm not sure that it's related to the Sheffield/York/Newcastle Taps.

Yes, it was those two that I was referring to - sorry for any confusion.

I think nearby is fine, especially if it has railway themed name or decor. But only if you can get a decent pint of real ale.
In that case, the Alexandra near Derby station. Full of old railway signs and signals, plus has a class 37 (I think?) cab in the beer garden.

It's been covered in a separate thread on this forum:

Apologies, I was slightly surprised it hadn't been covered!

Not my tipple, but will doubtless complement the Wigan Central for those non-ale drinkers !

That's the plan. Yeah, I'm first choice real ale, but sometimes fancy something different.

Glynde, East Sussex

A new Steamworks Bar has recently (Dec 2024) opened in buildings at Glynde station [GLY].
Same company as the one at Seaford.

See https://steamworksbars.co.uk/about-us/glynde-steamworks-is-open-6472323

I called for a very quick half just before Christmas - I'd only spotted it was there just before my train left.

It looks very promising - a similar set up to the (very good) Seaford Steamworks - but note the more restricted opening hours which I think might be down to planning constraints.

The Spitting Feathers microbrewery is hoping to convert the former cafe at Chester station into a beer hall serving 8 cask and 20 keg beers.

However they need extra investment to bring this to fruition and so have set up a crowd funding site at

...Now we're embarking on our most ambitious project yet: The Chester Station Tap Room:
  • A fantastic beer hall unlike anywhere in Chester.
  • 20 keg lines and 8 cask lines, the widest range of beers around.
  • A great location, part of Chester Railway Station; the perfect destination for travellers and locals alike.
But this dream requires your support...

Will definitely make use of it when Avanti cancel north Wales coast services and you have to wait for an overcrowded TfW 197 along the coast instead!

excellent news - Chester really needs a good station pub imo.

Amended.

Last Saturday, with no exceptional major events in the region, the gateline queues to enter the platforms would have prevented arriving passengers from even seeing the projected bar. Waiting time was up to 3 minutes. Arriving passengers frequently back up the steps and across the bridge, especially if there are two or more simultaneous arrivals on platforms 4 to 7.

The number of barriers is totally inadequate for the volume of passengers, particularly at peak times.

The Deva Tap is barely a five minute walk from the station and there's also the Town Crier opposite the barriers if you just want a quick pint and aren't too fussed about the quality!

If you're a beer lover, the Cellar Bar, Corner House & Old Harkers Arms are at the other end of City Road, just a few minutes walk away from the station

Not forgetting The Cornerhouse just a few yards further up City Road!

And “That Beer Place” at the other side of the Roundabout. Sure it’s another 2/3 mins walk but they have a brilliant selection on keg and cans in the fridge. Just don’t underestimate the drunken stagger back down City Road for the last train… o_O
