Paths are on RTT for the transfers of 458s next week.

Monday 8th April
5Z53 0712 Leicester L.I.P. to Widnes Transport Tech

5Q62 1311 Widnes Transport Tech to Wembley Receptions 1-7

Tuesday 9th April
5X64 1135 Wembley Receptions 1-7 to Southampton Down Loop

5Q64 1534 Southampton Down Loop to Bournemouth T&R.S.M.D

5Z66 2018 Bournemouth T&R.S.M.D to Eastleigh East Yard

onward paths from Eastleigh are not yet loaded.

I am guessing this will be for the delivery of 458421 from Widnes and 458514 to Widnes?

As this mornings loco move from Leicester has been cancelled (5z53) I assume this means the same for the drag as a whole?

The move has not been cancelled as a whole now, the class 701 drag was cancelled so now 69008 is going to Bournemouth TRSMD to pick up 458514 for refurbishment.

RE Post 2682 above: But that move seems to have been cancelled too, so nothing has happened except that 69008 has gone back to Leicester !!

How many 458/5s are in passenger service now?

It looks like yesterday was the final day in passenger service as a 458/5 for 458513, so I *think* the current status of the 458 fleet is now;

458/5 In passenger service (18)
458502,503,506,509-512,518,519,526,527
458529-532,534-536

458/5 Long-term out of service (1)
458533 28.01.22

458/5 status unknown (2)
458508 29.02.24
458514 03.04.24 (to Bournemouth 04.04.24, but not to Widnes)

458/5 awaiting transfer to Widnes (1)
458513

458/4 Work in progress at Widnes (2)
458x01,x21

458/4 Completed and delivered to SWR (12)
458404,405,407,415-417,420,422-425,428

I welcome any corrections to errors that I may have made.

Thanks for the update.

So, excluding 458513 which is ready to go north, there are 13 left to do. We're around the half-way mark.

Looks like 7th June is pencilled in for the first 458/4 service on the 2S/R/V services, if all goes to plan.

The spoilt Reading line won’t be pleased, but seeing as they threw such a fit about 8 carriage trains, they wouldn’t want them anyway ;)

I wonder if we’ll get our badly needed 12s back on the Alton line. I definitely prefer 10-444, but they’re not great for crowds.

Tongue in cheek I assume as the Reading line has been anything but spolit! A worse timetable and service now than 20 years ago after many years of being promised 4TPH. Not to mention the closures what feels like every weekend...

Glad these are entering sergice as the situation is desperate. June still feels a long way off though, and if a training course is required (for these units that have been on these routes for 20+ years in some form or other....) then it will also delay the introduction of the 701's I assume.

I presume it'll allow a cascade of 450s back onto the readings until the 701s ever appear on that line

Not now, certainly, but back in the days of slam door stock it was noticeable that the Reading line got CIGs when most outer suburban routes got VEPs! A 455 is a bit of a comedown from those days!

In pre-SWT days, certainly at least until the late 80s the Reading line was classed as main line. Now it's pretty much inner-suburban.

That was on the background of a pretty run down GWML which knocked a couple of HSTs in at random stations and otherwise the commuter was by an inadequate DMU. There’s now a wildly increased electric service which has drawn a lot of people onto it, and post covid apart from peaks, 2TPH is more than adequate.

Indeed. It's also 2tph in the peaks.

I used the line yesterday: on a 455 in both directions.

Definitely felt noisier and less comfortable than the old 458s : the 701s are nowhere near ready then?
