Hopefully good news about the 'Second Bite' tour on 18th March, the tour clashes with the latest round of strikes that have been announced but the BLS expect the tour to be able to proceed as advertised, updates will be made as and if necessary

Some go as far as to count each direction separately!

On my September/October 2022 Eurailpass, the ELR railcar was badly late from Norwich to the ECML, so it avoided Ely and I managed to travel on what I was informed was a curve rarely used by passenger trains. Disheartening to know according to some I have to repeat the feat in the opposite direction, which I assume is considered 'on the down'. Mission impossible for foreigners to do this!

Another BLS Tour has been added for 1/5 with a Class 50 and pair of Class 20's from Derby to Holyhead & Llandudno and return via Derby, Leicester, Nuneaton, Birmingham and Shrewsbury outwards and via Chester, Crewe, Stafford and Birmingham on the return.

The thing about rail enthusiasm is that it is what matters to you that counts, not others.
If you want to count tracks in any direction, you are most welcome to do so.
It's your hobby/interest, not theirs.

The Ely Loop. Up until 1988 it was used regularly by loco-hauled services between Peterborough & Norwich, so was easy to cover back then. Not so common now, as services from Norwich - Peterborough reverse at Ely. Haven't done it in a while myself

Dual braking is indeed a reason why Class 37s and 47s remain popular on the charter scene...

I suspect the most recent loco to be built with dual brakes would be 60163 Tornado, about 15 years ago

And understandably so, it would rather limit its operation if it were air-only. Of course I was referring to modern diesel and electric locomotives, clearly.

Coaching stock stopped being built with Vacuum brakes in the late 60s/early 70s, so I'd imagine locos to have stopped being fitted with dual from new around the same time. There was a thread on the phase-out of Vacuum brakes a little while ago.

Indeed, although there is still a fair bit of Mk I charter stock kicking around which is vac-only and it's not unusual for heritage locos such as 47s to have their vac brake capability reinstated for use on these trains.

And at the same time, we're trying to fit ETCS to those locos!

Well if they want to keep running they'll need the appropriate signalling systems. Vacuum braking isn't unsafe to use on the mainline, just not as good as air brakes.
Indeed, I believe a WCRC 47 will have it fitted as part of the ECML trial.
Yes, the East Coast Digital upgrade programme (or whatever it's called) will usually pay for first-of-class fitment to develop the designs and get the paperwork sorted out. Not sure how the rest of the fleet is funded, might be a mix of different sources.
The A1 trust had an article on Tornado being fitted with the ETCS kit in advance of trials prior to the ECML works. https://www.a1steam.com/tornado/news/tornado-details/etcs-installation-project-milestone

it’s enough of a pain in the *rse to understand all of the locomotive variants and years of undocumented modifications, before we take vacuum brakes into account too!

But it all has to be done to keep these railtours and charters going.

A couple of years ago I would have been very keen on standardising heritage stock as it'd have made my job much easier! Less bothered about it now as I don't work with charters nor have the money and time to ride them.

Looks like from wnxx that the BLS are going to run some sort of a 313 farewell on the 29th April. No details yet.

Hopefully it will be a bit more adventurous than the 315 farewell lol

This looks like a great trip but it’s quite short notice and for that reason I can’t do it
I agree, but it could be useful for anyone retired in Scotland. I believe it was some form of training run that is carrying passengers on a charitable basis so hard to justifiably criticise on this occasion.
