While that sounds sensible, swapping power sources is not one of the 769s strong points, seems to be why they currently do it out of the way at Bolton.

Good to see progress slowly but surely towards Wigan. More metal work has gone up towards Ashton U Lyne this weekend too.

I see a newly established NIMBY force have been making noise about the bridge works. Wonder if they'll still be complaining when near-silent EMUs coast past their homes in 2024?
February 20th is quoted as the date for installation of the replacement.

Local residents are warned about the work though through mail direct to their homes.

That's what makes it even more remarkable that these people then have the audacity to complain.

Papers have nothing to print now that the restrictions are over on Thursday, so they've decided to pick on the railways instead, they should use 37s on the piling works.

Eh - its fine to ruin people's weekend and keep them awake as long as you warn them?! What good is the warning, unless you are prepared to pay for them to stay elsewhere?

The railways quite rightly have grandfather rights. From time-to-time noisy activities have to take place. The people chose to live next to a railway. Once the railway is electrified the trains will be much quieter,

The common law obligation to be a "good neighbour" goes much beyond "we were here first".

I'm not commenting one way or another as to whether the industry has been an unacceptably poor neighbour here as I don't know.

I assume that though they were warned it would be noisy, they didn't realise how noisy!

That is reality. I was just opposed to the idea that is was somehow outrageous cheek for the residents to complain.
Piling is the worse - that can be a really really stress inducing disturbance a good distance away from where it is actually happening. A bit like water torture and because you feel the noise its much harder to block out.

A friend of mine was piling out in the Thames estuary at night, at least a mile from the nearest shore. Having set the BIG diesel hammer going, he an his crew settled down to sleep around its base. After a couple of hours his sleep was rudely disturbed by a police officer from a launch saying there had been complaints about the noise and could he stop until the morning.

I had similar complaints myself at Huyton and Bamber Bridge. In both cases we carried on, having a big hole in the railway to fill before the trains started running.

How on earth do you settle down to sleep right next to a pile driver?!

Pile driving for East West Rail kept me awake, and that was over a mile away!

I don't want to get too far OT - almost worth starting another thread.

I really do take your point about piling. I can see the benefit when in open space away from housing etc. But you have to be correct - near houses etc that piling may induce other stresses in foundations etc. I know it would put cost up but when houses are nearby almost worth going back to old concrete foundations possibly. As this is an old mining area - old fashioned concrete bases may have been best from the outset.

Easy when you work hard. I used to sleep inside the engine room on Matisa ballast cleaners! If anything went wrong, a change in the engine note would wake you up.

Oh, my mate had one ticking over outside his bedroom window all night during electrification on the Manchester - Euxton jct route.
He's a crank, but all night was too much for him!

Back OT:
What's next after the bridge work do we think, lengthening platforms?

If possible a lot of multi tasking should be going ahead. making best use of possessions.
Civils can go ahead alongside Resignalling, installation of new IBJ's and removal of redundant ones, Veg clearance and Platform works.

Or even civils.

Now corrected! Thanks

To a layman I would hope there are lessons learned and joined up thinking and maximum use of possessions. Presumably though it is not as simple as I think it should be.

There are presumably issues with that around scheduling access of different groups going to different places but needing the same access points and/or blocking each other's routes to their work area.

No different to any work site other than scale of operation over the last 25 years or so. Co-ordination, Planning and Communication.
