From the images I have seen, 196101 has now reverted back to the black front, a backwards step IMHO as the 196 series certainly is ugly and the black front doesn't help its appearance.

It isn't beautiful but the black front does improve it as the orange and yellow didn't go together that well.

The rather ugly WMR livery does not help.

I agree that they really are quite ugly!
However in my opinion the yellow looks more functional whilst the black is more aesthetic - so I slightly prefer the latter

I reckon they'd look fine with a full either black or yellow end TBH.

Agreed - the choice of orange on the forward facing parts of the cab just makes it look a mess either way - yellow sticks out for being close but not close enough, black just sticks out like a sore thumb. Then again, the 730s don't look much worse

I personally think the black gangway suits them better - the yellow gangway ruined its look in all honesty.

The gangway is the ugliest part of a unit, being a boring shape and covered in dead flies, so highlighting it by painting it yellow but the rest of the end a darker colour just looks rubbish. The LNR 350s with that arrangement look just as awful. Either a full yellow end, or no yellow at all, otherwise it looks terrible.

I think that’s standard with the CAF Civity units - never heard a Northern 195/331 unit without a loud braking noise.

Engine wise it sound like a 172 when it pulled off in person if you can't hear in the video.

I believe that’s because they have a very similar powertrain setup. They both share a ZF mechanical transmission whilst the 196 has a more powerful version of the MTU engine in the 172.

I know the livery is divisive but I think it looks great. The units look good too. I hope they’ll avoid the ride quality issues seen in Northerns 195s

I suspect the inherent ride of the 196s will be little different unless CAF have made changes to the suspension design of the Citivies - the ride quality seems to be a feature common across CAF stock in general in the UK. Where there may be difference however is the ride quality when seated, since WMR have selected a seat design (FISA Lean if I recall) that offers more padding than the seating used in the 195/331s.

Love the look of these units - the livery suits them perfectly.
Is it still just the 4 units that have so far been handed over to WMT?
Also, I notice in those great pics above that we have coach numbers 124104 and 122104 - does anyone know how the other coaches are numbered please?

Nice pictures i wasn't sure the first time i saw the 196 but now they have received the full livery they look not bad.

Amusing that PIS is still broken at Spring Road, it was like that when i was there weeks ago!

Still hate the livery. The fact that the "blending" diamonds are a different shade of orange to the ends (presumably vinyls have faded faster than the paint, in the manner of the awful-looking ScotRail HSTs where you can see which bit is vinyl and which bit paint) makes it look even worse.

The colours would work well on a simpler livery, though, e.g. all over purple with orange doors and yellow (or indeed black) end.

Superb, thanks Dom (just realised I put 122004 and 124004 in my post when I meant 104 - I've amended it now to avoid potential confusion).
Might be pushing my luck a bit now, but would you happen to know the coach numbers on the 2 cars as well please?

Thanks in advance

I don't, that was just me reading them off a video! I would expect 1210xx and 1240xx though (which could probably be more generically done as 121xxx and 124xxx as the /0s are the 2 cars and /1s are the 4 cars)

That logic makes sense - hopefully we will find out with our own eyes sooner rather than later :)
Thanks again for your help
