Just had my contract through, Start on the 10th December! Training at Ipswich, was down for Peak Forest but ended up with Doncaster. Lot closer to me which is brilliant. Thank you to everyone on here for the tonnes of advice and help, and good luck to everyone still going for it. Don't give up.

Hello all, regarding the CV you take for the stage 2 assessments and interveiws; how much do they rely on you having a good/full CV? I'm 23 and mine is just 1 page, I've been with the same employer for a while so I don't have much experience on paper. Plus for references I just have "available on request", is it best to actually put a reference just in case they need it or do they not bother with the CV all that much?

Also congrats to everyone getting good news, it's very encouraging and helpful for us that haven't yet sat our stage 2 to hear your successfulness and experieces. Hopefully I can post good news on here in the coming months after I sit my stage 2 assessments.

Cheers :)

My personal opinion would be to always just do the best you can with it, I had never written one before, try aiming for two pages and have a look online at different CV layouts to find one that works for you, this helped me to feel more comfortable in writing one.

From experience, and from industry advice, it’s best to limit your CV to a couple of sheets of A4 at the most anyway (obviously if it needs to be more due to vast experiences, sobeit, but for most two sheets is sufficient). Mine covers about 20-years and also has a couple of volunteer positions listed and is just under two pages long.

Bear in mind other than your interview, the CV is all they have to go on as they’re was no competency based application form to fill out, so the CV needs to be as best as it can be. I’m sure yours will be fine, so don’t fret. I’d recommend a decent personal statement at the top of the first page too, any maybe taylor it to a safety critical role emohasising on safety? I’m by no means an expert, but have seen my fair share of poor CVs when recruiting staff and it’s not usually the content that’s poor, but attention to detail. Make sure the presentation is good (put a border on it, make sure all the fonts are the same etc etc).

I’m not sure what your background is, but your experience in work terms is only part of the CV. Make sure your education and qualifications are all listed and any voluntary work too.

I put about references being available upon request on mine, which is standard practice anyway so would be fine. As a side note, if you have a LinkedIn profile or something, some people put a link to this, as it can vastly expand non one’s work history without page upon page of CV.

Good luck!

Slightly off topic but I thought this was pretty cool and maybe a bit of inspiration for those still in the recruitment process.

Fantastic. Even more off topic, but DB have just unveiled a similar one too. I know it’s a lot to do with positive publicity, but nonetheless it’s a fantastic sentiment.

Cheers Seejwalker, I’ll try and make it a bit longer if possible then :)

Thanks for that info Stigy, I’ll have to dig deep and see if there’s anything else noteworthy I can add. I’ve only had 2 proper jobs since leaving school and they were both a longish time in each place so not a lot I can add.

I have already written an A4 page personal statement in anticipation for a different TOC because they do ask for one but they haven’t advertised for jobs and I’m obviously tied in with FL’s application now so I haven’t needed it, I could always bring that along... My background is HGV driving so there is a fair bit I have managed to write from a safety aspect. Cheers :)

No worries mate. With HGV driving you’ll be great at that “what have you done similar to a train driver?” Question at MMI! ;)

Haha hopefully :) Although it’s all the experience I have and I can’t use HGV for every question, I might need more examples.

Never had to do this on my medical. Interesting one that.
Hi, I’m currently in the pool waiting to be allocated a course start date for Birmingham. Would you be able to clarify what information they ask for on the medical regarding attendance and how far back etc as getting hold of my HR is long winded at the best of the times so I can start to gather information now. Cheers and good luck for when you start :)

Medical on Wednesday then fingers crossed I get a start date Soon can't wait to quit my job lol
How much notice do they normally give you?
I phoned them on Wednesday for some general info about pay dates and a rough idea on coarse dates. I spoke to Corrinne and they are working on contracts this week coming so hope fully should start hearing around the 20th nov

So what did she say about course dates? Any ideas of whether this year or next?
