Is this for performance / covid reasons - or simply due to not enough serviceable vehicles to make an 8-caoch set? How many sets will be in daily service?
Mostly because of the low demand due to Covid, therefore removing the 2 coaches helps save fuel. I suspect the condition of the sets is partly to do with it as well, though. There are two 2+6 ex LNER sets at the moment both of which are formed differently.

I was at Wellingborough station today heading north (planned to get the 09.53, but missed it, so got the 10.56 instead). I saw 2x LNER HSTs go through the station - one had 1x First Class coach, the 1st buffet, and 4x standard. The other had 2x 1st, 1x 1st Buffet, and 3x Standard. So indeed different formations.

Interestingly, I was expecting to get on a Meridian but got a HST instead - pleasantly surprised! Might be my last HST ride.
One of the Standard Class coaches on this set (one of the buffered sets) had wider seats than normal so I can only presume it's a 1st class set that has since been converted to standard?

There is one other useful thing about the 2+6s: less coaches means faster acceleration. It seems like the journey time of the 2+6 HST is pretty close to that of a 5 car Meridian (whilst also having windows that don't block out RF signals).

Yes, the ex-Grand Central sets do have a first-class carriage (with 2+1 seating layout) permanently in use as standard.

There are three 2+6 red sets at the moment.

Headboard on the north end, I believe. Which means the very last "proper" Midland Main Line power car onto depot will be, appropriately, 43049.
Headboard was removed at St Pancras and will not be on for F70. It was taken down one of the lifts.

As well as yesterday being the last day of Paxmans and blue sets, was it not also the last day for the Angel sets?
I did a round trip from Wellingborough to Corby in the belief that it was - and also said my goodbye to pristine, well maintained leather seats on the MML (unless I get a red HST set)

I think you are correct. Maybe blue sets (not power cars) in action today tho.

Was it the last day for the blue sets? So far as I'm aware some of them will continue for a while yet as even with the reduced HST usage they won't have enough red sets.

Thank you. There does seem to be a lot more LNER power cars than would be needed for the number of sets, so retention of the blue sets would seem likely.
As often the case on the railways, the original objective (replacing the less PRM blue sets with LNER sets) seems to have been lost to achieving a sub-objective (replace the Paxman power cars).
Not to mention the scrapping of coaches with very recently refurbished interiors while the 222s have (last tine I looked) very worn upholstery and loose squabs and cushions.

The whole situation has been a good example of a DfT cock-up! If they hadn't intervened it would never have happened.

It won't be for the set's as there is not enough red sets in service yet (4 of 5 or 6?? in use). In terms of Power Car's it was the last day for the blue ones.

Are there actually going to be any more red sets now?

I think there is 5 diagrams on weekdays now so you would probably need 2 more sets to completely remove the blue ones.

Yes, but are they going to remove the blue ones? There have been various mentions that there won't be any more red ones because of the amount of work they need, and they will stick with a mixture until the HSTs get withdrawn. I don't know whether this is still the current plan though.

One blue set stays as cover for a short while until they can get the required number of red sets ready.

The Porterbrook blue HST sets have to be withdrawn from traffic on the 31st December 2020 as the derogation to allow them to stay in service expires. I suspect that EMR are running 2+6 red sets as they don't have enough vehicles to run full sets. Any fuel savings will be a bonus.

So does the derogation on the red sets (they also are a long way from compliant, just marginally less so than the blue sets). So basically a new derogation is required for whatever remains into next year.

If they don't have enough red sets in service by then (they won't), then the derogation will be extended for the specific vehicles required.

Quite! The dispensation (NOT derogation) for all three fleets expires on 31/12.

The Train Manager on a blue 8 car set I was on today said it was that particular sets last day in service today.
