SWR Class 458 to be retained

I think the 450s were still supposed to do Haslemere terminators, and possibly Pompey stoppers, as well as lengthening suburban routes. But there have been so many schemes proposed then abandoned by SWR that it's hard to remember what changed and when.

Yes it’s frankly insulting to stand all the way from Aldershot or Guildford every morning and then be told repeatedly by someone else that the trains aren’t busy.
Indeed, Guildford has got noticeably busier over the past 18 months, but particularly since the second week in January when there has presumably been more of a demand by employers to get back to the office. Ideally need another mainliner in the morning peak as the TW&Ts and to a lesser extent the Ms pack out the existing timetable. Fridays still a nice haven to look forward to for those seeking comfort if you pick your time and place.

The booked movement from Widnes to Bournemouth overnight 12/02 - 13/02 mentioned earlier in this thread apparently took place, but is it known which unit was brought back ?

Posted elsewhere that 458416 was conveyed within 5X62 to Bournemouth yesterday and, as previously quoted, 458515 on 5Q64 to Widnes.

The planned second unit to be delivered this week looks like it may have been cancelled because 57303 + 57305 have returned to Leicester. This evenings 5Q62 from Widnes is not yet shown as cancelled though.

This must be putting a strain on available stock by now surely? Seen a number of 5 vice 10 running about lately. Guessing at some point they're going to struggle to even do that, unless they can start filling the void? Was the original plan to start replacing them with 450's displaced by putting the 458/4's into action?

At least a couple of 458’s serving Woking today. Occasionally there’s one on a Sunday, but there’s definitely more today… unless it’s the same one going to West Byfleet and back again.

Guessing the oddity is due to engineering works.

There is a class 458/4 delivery path that has appeared on RTT

From what I hear from ex colleagues (I used to commute from Kingston area) there are nowadays crowding problems on number of SWR services. And the diminishing number of 458s in service is making it worse.

But let's park crowding discussion until Thursday, when ORR issues latest regional rail usage figures, and keep this thread 458 specific.

It looks like the locos then return direct to Leicester, rather than taking another unit to Widnes, so I am guessing that this will be 458424 post rectification?
I think it is 458424 coming back.

The next move to Widnes should be 458522 moving from Bournemouth depot on Tuesday 27th Feb. This means it is likely to stop at Wimbledon Wednesday 21st or Thursday 22nd as it planed to move from Wimbledon to Bournemouth on Friday 23rd Feb.

Thank you for that information. I notice that 458522 should up at Farnham tonight and both sets that start at Farnham tomorrow morning should visit Wimbledon Park either at at the end of the morning peak or at the end of the day.

Great isn't it? Promised new 10 car trains and instead get 40 year old 8 car trains...

From the SWR website
"Our Class 701 Arterio trains will replace the 458s in future, at which point they will be sent for refurbishment."
The 701 rollout and staff training should have happened by now, so is having a knock on effect.
The website does not say what's happening to the 458s, the refurbishment project was to get 458s running as 12 car trains from Portsmouth rather than stuck in sidings.

Unusually 5B39 is actually allocated on RTT today, but it shows as 455909 instead of 458522. But 458522 has not been in use since Wednesday and 5B39 did run yesterday, so perhaps 458522 was moved from Wimbledon to Bournemouth a day earlier than planned?

I saw 5B39 rush through Woking (greens all the way) at about 1050 this morning and can confirm it was a VERY noisy 5909: The motors were wineing like anything !
