Ranking three southern England preserved railways

I think this sums it up very well. If you like history, Bodiam castle is also worth a visit, and Tenterden is a pleasant small town. The Bluebell's stations have been restored to a high standard (apart from the new East Grinstead terminus), and the railway is well-known for its preservation of...

    Pumpkin Sheffield closed

And the Upper Crust baggettes were at least twice the size they are now - the whole thing, not one cut in two or three.

GWR Class 769 information. (Units no longer with GWR - Off Lease March 23)

Steam? No wonder they're complicated: 25Kv A.C.; 750v D.C.; diesel; and kettle power too! :D

Sheffield Supertram & Tram Train news

A quick question on Supertram fares if I may? I'm visiting Sheffield later this month, and fancy a trip up the "new" route to Rotherham & Parkgate. I see that there's currently a £2 maximum fare on Sheffield Supertram, sensibly matching the present England-wide bus fare. Would I be right in...

Why do only Worcester and Hereford InterCity services call at Slough, whilst the rest of GWR inter city services to Paddington skip it.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the first W.R. coach link to Heathrow was from High Wycombe connecting out of the Birmingham to Paddington trains that ran that way at the time. (i.e. before the coach link was moved to operate from Reading) But I don't think the Slough stops being discussed here...

London’s newest train line is now also its busiest - The Economist, UK

And to think the station at Woolwich almost wasn't built!

Why do only Worcester and Hereford InterCity services call at Slough, whilst the rest of GWR inter city services to Paddington skip it.

I think the Slough stops on Paddington - Oxford services date back to Network SouthEast/Thames Trains days, when the idea was to link the tourist hot spots of Windsor & Oxford. The Paddington to Stratford on Avon service that then ran called at Slough for the same reason. Of course, a lot of...

    802 in a sorry state

Pretty surprised to see GWR running it around in that state actually; they're usually better than this. Preferable to a cancelled train is about the only positive spin I can put on it. Hitatchi need to do their job properly - and pronto!

Great Western Hotel Exeter to closed Saturday 29 April 2023

Although the owner Raj said the final straw was his last full time member of staff handing in his notice. Like lots of pubs, restaurants, & hotels throughout the country he was struggling to get staff; the Great Western itself was often no longer open at lunchtimes or in the afternoon. Stating...

Heathrow Express travellers defecting to Elizabeth line

I remember several years ago talking to the Guard on a train in Switzerland. He had just retuned from a trip to London, and even with the strength of the Swiss Franc against the pound was complaining how much a trip on Hex had cost him!

Journey planner with option solely for buses

Has anyone used the traveline.info website recently? I've recently changed my computer (which may or may not be relevant) and when I visit the website, I get the usual large background pretty photo of Caernarfon castle or wherever, but not the search "box" in the middle of the screen that...

Heathrow Express travellers defecting to Elizabeth line

And the Edinburgh tram to the airport? And the new Luton Airport thingy? Why should people have to pay a premium just because they happen to be going to an airport anyway?

Trivia : UK Trains that change from 'up' to 'down' a lot

Pre Covid there was a short lived through train from Waterloo to Corfe Castle operated by South Western Railway. The down train reversed at Yeovil Junction; where I pressume it became an up train to Yeovil Junction; then a down train again to Weymouth; where it became an up train to Wareham...

Trivia: Stations located uphill from city and town centres

Very much so to the now closed Cromer High. Not so sure about the -still open- Cromer Beach!

Trivia: Stations located uphill from city and town centres

If we're allowed closed railways, I can add Ilfracombe & Tavistock North, both former Southern Railway stations in Devon.

    Should Oxford have a tramway?

At least that'll make it a lot more accessable by public transport than the current location. But no plans to go back to Headington I assume?! Kidlington United anyone?

    Brexit matters

We had that before Brexit. It was one of the many advantages of being in the EU. But we voted collectively to leave the EU club, and some say we voted to end freedom of movement. That included ending OUR freedom of movement. People on the continent have lost freedom of movement to an island; we...
