Severn valley railway news and updates.

Thanks kje7812! Probably give it a miss then; if the pub is shut, I can't see anything else being open either.

Severn valley railway news and updates.

I'm going to be in the Kidderminster area in the middle of the coming week. Obviously SVR trains won't be running, but will it be worthwhile calling in at the station? I assume the pub will be open, but what about the shop & museum?

Stations that don't contain the name of a settlement, particularly termini

Beat me to it. How about one of the new stations about to begin construction on Birmingham's Camp Hill line: I think the name chosen is Pineapple Street or Road or some such.

Autumn refresh for GWR Class 165/166 Turbos

The big question is: were the reading lights removed at Reading depot? See what I did there? I'll get my coat.

First South West (Kernow & Buses of Somerset)

I agree it's not the end of the world on most bus routes. But this is the Dartmoor Explorer. When your bus has not turned up, there's only two buses a day anyway, and the next bus may now be tomorrow morning (if that runs), that's something else. Add in the possibility that you might not be in...

First South West (Kernow & Buses of Somerset)

I posted on 20th Feb how I'd waited for the 10.00 Exeter to Tavistock but it didn't turn up. Absolutely nothing at the bus stop at Exeter St. Thomas station to show that the route even serves the stop: no timetable and no route number on the flag. If it hadn't been included in the Devon County...

First South West (Kernow & Buses of Somerset)

Thanks for the reply Goldfish62. I've e-mailed First Bus using their Adventures by Bus address; no reply as yet, but early days.

First South West (Kernow & Buses of Somerset)

I waited in vain for the 10.00 Dartmoor Explorer from Exeter to Tavistock today. I gave up after half an hour and went home. Anyone know what happened to it?

Autumn refresh for GWR Class 165/166 Turbos

As built, they were on/off switches for individual overhead reading lights.

Autumn refresh for GWR Class 165/166 Turbos

I came across this set on a local train in Devon the other day; I'd not heard of the leather seats in "first class" (as was) on this set; I quite liked it actually!

    Belfast suggestions

Get a train to Larne to pick up a bus on the very scenic North Antrim coast road towards Ballycastle. Translink bus routes 162/162a. Another vote for the Crown Liquor Saloon in Belfast - literally just across the road from Gt. Victoria Street railway station. Six real ales and been in the Good...

Books on the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway?

Personally, I've always found Ossie Nock's books very dry indeed, but I can't say I've read more than three or four for that reason.

Railway Journalist and Editor Peter Kelly has died

Both spot on. Comic madness that sticks in my mind was a spoof Pacer trip to Paris due to the failure of the booked Eurostar (or some such story); and a couple of upper class slappers (NOT Beryl or Cheryl!) getting their Fortnum & Mason hamper stuck in the doors of a Bakerloo line train on the...

Marsh Barton Railway Station Exeter - Construction

Thanks for the update; and thanks for dragging me back on topic!:D

Marsh Barton Railway Station Exeter - Construction

Although interestingly, if you read right through that linked announcement, it's twice called Torquay Gateway; once called Torquay Gateweay (sic); but it also says it will be known as Edginswell, and is at Edginswell. It seems to have a bit of an identity crisis!

Marsh Barton Railway Station Exeter - Construction

This the first I've heard of that idea, but I've googled it and sure enough as mentioned by REVUpminster above, a wikipedia entry comes up. Torquay Gateway sounds pretty meaningless to me, but I admit I don't know the area that well. Still, I'm sure there's plenty of time to change the name...

How much has through running pushed up Elizabeth Line Ridership?

It most certainly DOES matter if you're travelling on a ticket valid on National Rail (& therefore Elizabeth Line), but not valid on the Tube!

Rail projects in the Levelling Up Fund

I agree that the railway west of Exeter is slow. But you must have a better car than me; one that can jump over the traffic jams in front if you think that road is that much faster (despite the vast sums that have been spent on it). Exeter has allegedly amongst the slowest traffic of all the...

Okehampton - Exeter open a year- success?

The Okehampton station buffet has indeed re-opened: I enjoyed a rather good "full English" in there this morning.
