    South Wales 'Metro' updates

First I've heard of this "Newport Road" station on what appears to be the main line west of Cardiff Central. It's certainly not advanced enough to be included in this forum's new stations thread. Yet the blue line (tramway?) leading from it is shown on the map in post 4,386 as "funded". What...

Great Western Hotel Exeter to closed Saturday 29 April 2023

All in all a great shame. Local sources (verbal only) are suggesting that Saturday 29th April will be the last day. This means there will be no pubs at all just outside Exeter St. David's station. For those who are able to do a 10 to 15 minute walk, there's still the choice of: Exeter Brewery...

Great Western Hotel Exeter to closed Saturday 29 April 2023

Hi Ashley Hill, Don't have a source for this, do you? I assume this means the both the pub & hotel side of the business? Although not the great pub it once was pre covid, with a much-reduced range of beers now, it'll still be a sad loss. The fact that it often didn't open until the late...

London Overground NLL closed due to signaller sickness 17/04/23

This sort of thing must be costing Network Rail an absolute fortune in penalty payments to TfL; and rightly so. NR need to sort out a better level of sickness cover than this - and it might even work out cheaper in the long run.

GwR HSTs to be stood down

The "full and standing" may perhaps have something to do with the fact that there was a Exeter v Plymouth local football derby going on?

Advice required for a Stagecoach Smart novice

Thanks to everyone for your comments & advice. I think I'll be going down the advance online purchase route to be on the safe side. It's more of a faff than just buying a ticket on the bus, but hey, the demise of paper tickets was always going to have winners & losers. By the way, I assume as...

Advice required for a Stagecoach Smart novice

Thanks for the reply GusB. One further thought: in Exeter we have a Stagecoach South West "Travel Shop" at the bus station. Do you think that they would be able to issue Smart Cards with advance start date Scottish Megarider tickets already loaded?

Advice required for a Stagecoach Smart novice

My better half & I are spending a week in late May walking some sections of the Fife coastal path & staying in Anstruther. We're travelling north to Scotland by train, and then using Stagecoach's X60 bus from Kirkcaldy or Dalgetty Bay for the final leg to our accomodation. While there we intend...

    Longest gaps between station calls

As did I, going southbound. I think I looked the distance up at the time, and if I remember correctly, it was almost the same distance non-stop as Kings Cross to Dunkeld & Birnham (one stop north of Perth on the Highland Main Line).

All Line Rovers at Tottenham Court Road

Thanks. And thanks for your useful site!

All Line Rovers at Tottenham Court Road

Hi Rover. You're still saying on the ALR page that it's not valid on TfL Rail to Heathrow - which is potentially confusing even though TfL no longer exists; it could be misconstrued that this means not valid on Elizabeth Line to Heathrow.

Project Oval: TfL win DfT contract to expand contactless system to 233 rail stations by May 2024, Railcards coming to contactless payment cards

I find it quite amazing that the project is now so advanced that infrustructure is going in at stations as illustrated by Harryeurostar's photo above, but the extent of the scheme with a list of stations included still hasn't been announced to the public. Or have I missed something? If not, it...

    West Somerset fare information

I'm sure you're have no trouble turning up on the day and buying a single ticket, unless it is some sort of special event weekend or something. Trying to push everyone into buying day rovers is a bit naughty really, but I suppose it increases their revenue, and several other heritage railways...

Oxford Corridor Phase 2 & Platform 5 updates

I still remember when the A34 around Oxford was partly closed for resurfacing in the late 90s & usage at Hanborough went through the roof! Happily the growth continued, giving us the partly staffed, well used & served station of today.

Is Britain really the sick man of Europe?

This matches closely my own opinion on this subject.

    Hidden gems in the South?

If the South West is included in your "down south" from Birmingham remit, then how about Totnes? Slightly quirky "alternative" town with attractive buildings and motte & bailey castle. Market day Friday, lots of independent shops, it gets better as you climb the High Street towards the castle...

UK stations where entire service is/was provided by HSTs?

At first glance yes, but I'm afraid you're forgetting the DMUs operating from the bay to Gloucester & Cheltenham most hours.

    Salford Central Improvements

Looks better already. It would be nice if they got rid of the Buddleia forest on the disused platform as part of the work.....

Friday late start - even without Network Rail staff on strike.

GWR don't appear to be running any trains this morning to Barnstaple/Okehampton according to Realtime trains & Tiger, but are according to National Rail Enquiries - but with a yellow "!" warning triangle. Both lines are signalled by the box at Crediton fringing with Exeter panel, & the Network...

    Ticket machines inside gatelines

I came across one at Hereford last week. A passenger off a train, travelling without a ticket, was told to go and buy a ticket from it by the barrier staff.
