Metrocar updates and withdrawals - Tyne & Wear Metro

Took a wander up myself today, 4002 is gone as noted above, as is 4064, and 4037 is now where 4064 presumably was. The local "artists" have moved in fast. Still after 4003/14/25/49/59 plus stored 4070 - looking at the diagram numbers it appears there are only 56 cars scheduled to be in service...

ECML -ohle issue at Stevenage (20/09)

LNER saying on social media that there's no up services calling at Stevenage until Sunday morning (down services unaffected). No capacity to put the ones that would otherwise stop into platform 1?

Why the SDO at Drayton Park?

I've now been commuting to Moorgate for six months, and one question is bugging me... why do down trains use SDO at Drayton Park so that only the front 5 cars release the doors? No up trains do, the platforms appear pretty much the same length, and on all bar one occasion down trains have fitted...

    UK Rail Passenger Numbers Discussion

Similar experience - I persuaded my other half to take the train St Neots - Whitby for a family do this weekend; NationalRail.co.uk offered a fare just over £400; split ticketing brought that down to £239 (imho much better than a long, hot drive in a tiny Honda, especially the beautiful Esk...

Trivia: Areas that a class 158 have never been on.

Moorgate is pretty unlikely ever to see one :) Though if NR keeps one or two once withdrawls start, we might see them in more unusual places - I had to do a double-take seeing 153 385 in Ferme Park sidings this week...

Why isn't Farringdon a London Terminal?

Well... it does work! The smartcard opens the barriers at Kings Cross (old tube ticket hall) heading towards Old Street; haven't yet tried the reverse direction.

What hope for light rail expansion in the UK?

In Birmingham at the weekend, went out on a bus along Hagley Road and noted the Edgbaston terminus of the trams. Can anyone explain why it was sited to the south side of the road, clearly making sure it's forever going to be a dead end, when it could have been aligned ready to carry on down the...

    Why Class 37s?

If you're considering the whole-life climate impact, then a large proportion of that is in manufacture, not operations. Working the 37s until they drop is better for the climate overall than repeatedly buying the "latest and cleanest" every ten years or so - especially when we're still...

The most out of date advert you have seen at a station [Triva]

Until very recently, Baker Street platform 1 (one of the Met bays) had a poster for a mid-1970s exhibition.

How have the minor stations between Morpeth and Berwick avoided closure?

Might be fun finding paths through Welwyn though...

Why isn't Farringdon a London Terminal?

That's great - many thanks all!

Why isn't Farringdon a London Terminal?

Apologies for reopening this after such a long time but it's suddenly relevant to me due to a job change... so a St Neots - London Terminals season is valid on the fast GN services to Kings Cross and then the Northern Line to Old Street? I'm very surprised it would get me through the LU gateline.

Many thanks! Heading to Grove Park in any case, and you've saved me a long fruitless wait...

Does anyone know where 465190 and 465238 will be today, up to about 3pm?

    SouthEastern fleet replacement updates

Tender placed for SouthEastern fleet replacement: https://bidstats.uk/tenders/2022/W45/786367024 The numbers look like it's about right for disposing of most or all of the Networker fleet, but not much else.

Rail beating Air for market share Edinburgh-London

Most airline fares work point-to-point and to limited destinations; rail is a very complex network. I'd certainly agree that seats will be filled at the right price, and fares on the whole are too high, but how you do that without creating a complete dog's breakfast of a fare system full of...

Stena Line Dublin - New Bus Service

And no alterations from its former life as a vehicle designed to pack in urban travellers, leading to delays getting people on board - as unsurprisingly, most have at least one suitcase which ends up in the aisle :(

Abandoned lines least likely to be reinstated.

Not only most unlikely to be reinstated, but most unlikely to see anything remotely like it ever again... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brighton_and_Rottingdean_Seashore_Electric_Railway

    England-Belfast SailRail via Dublin

I did SailRail last weekend (a remarkable bargain starting from Cambs for £45!) and the Nolan shuttle bus now goes to Tara Street DART rather than Connolly. Didn't fancy hanging around in the street at 00:40 on a Sunday for the bus connecting with the sailing overnight but a cab from Connolly is...
