It was gbrf running the one I saw earlier

Don’t want to sound stupid, but does this mean gbrf drivers are trained on them, but not SWR drivers.

And the obvious follow up, if it is ok to train gbrf drivers then why can the same trainers not train up the SWR staff.

Being able to train one subset of drivers, but not another sounds more like administrative or rule book problem, than a real physical reason.

Reason is I still don't think swr have accepted the units yet.

GBRf are delivering and commissioning the units. Once the units have been commissioned they will pass to SWR for operation. Looks like good work for the FOC. Not only are they delivering them from the factory, but also tripping them for mods at Widnes, doing the mileage accumulation runs and the merry go round between Worksop and Derby. I expect GBRf are hoping these things never get accepted into traffic!

Not sure how long they've been there for, but 701 ramps are in place at Vauxhall
701 ramps have appeared at nearly all ‘metro’ platforms for some months now. (For some reason this has even included a few platforms without step-free access..)

With the first Class 458 going off lease does that mean the 701’s are closer to being put into public use. SWR aren’t known for their joined up thinking so I’m not holding my breath!

Three are now off lease, not just one, so you’d hope so. A lot of 455s also stopped from miles as well.

Nope, not yet at least. Still working their way though Software updates and build issues. The 701 fleet seems to be becoming the cursed child for Derby and for SWR - something which seems appropriate as itself feels like the cursed TOC.

Agreed. The 710 and 720 after seemingly intractable initial teething problems seem to be settling down. I wonder how the 730s are getting on with testing because they have a different cab again, incorporating at gangway.

I just don't understand what seems to have gone so wrong with the fleet if I'm honest - one of the units I saw out on test recently had some pretty iffy looking sealing over the panel joins, another had patches of what looked like recently applied sealant too (noticeable by the lightly weathered body and shiny areas around the joins). As well as the previously mentioned issues regarding doors coming open while on the move, safety systems and software faults, I do wonder what has happened in Derby over the last few months. It's also noticeable that a small number moved into Eastleigh Works this year, and haven't come out to play since.

10 car Class 701 on test heading towards Reading seen at Martins Heron at 4.20pm today. It looked to stop in the platform and they were testing the doors(?) - the orange door open lights were activated. It left after what I would call a regular time to "set down/pick up passengers" so all systems working. This is progress!

Was there as well, you might have seen me lurking on the platform in an anorak... 701 025 which has been doing the rounds for the past couple of weeks. Does a couple of runs between Aldershot and Waterloo then a last loop via Reading. The beep of the door open signal I thought was quite loud, sounded more like a fire alarm... Three blokes in hi-viz inside at the middle typing something into tablets.

Does this increased activity by NR mean we are a bit closer to handing over to SWR and entering service?

Not wanting to put a dampener on it, but they've been stopping and testing the doors since at leat the summer. However, it is good to see they are stretching their legs a little more than the Eastleigh - Basingstoke - Woking - Staines circuits.

If you make a software change, want to make sure everything else still works.

NR? What do NR have to do with their introduction?

Regarding door testing I saw one the other week parked up in Feltham with only 5 orange door lights illuminated instead of 10. Anyone know why this may be?

Testing Selective Door Opening? Or the units failed to talk to each other on this front.
