There is good photo on that link showing the location.
I imagine it's derailed right at the back, hence Hither Green showing platforms 1-5 blocked.

Indeed - the last three wagons. From the pictures, it gives the impression that it's on a route dominated by freight, rather than the opposite, given the two trains shown!

Hmm - that's not going to be cleared up by lunch time!

Of the NR pair of photos the left hand photo appears to show the aluminium strip part of an impedance bond (also note IBJs in the running rails) bent between the 2 derailed wagons which is presumably the signalling equipment damage BaldRick mentioned in post 13.

Some recovery should be possible for this evening but not realistically for services on the slows for Sidcup /Orpington.

Don't recall seeing that often, Hastings-Tonbridge-London services going via Redhill and East Croydon. It must be quite bad if they've decided to take this approach.

It happened back in November time as I was on a 375 from East Croydon via Redhill which was heading for Hastings (which given the Southern fiasco, gave the line some service too!) but I don't believe it is generally all too common

It occurs fairly often, either from engineering diversions or blockages such as this.

There were emergency point repairs in the area yesterday lunchtime which shut lines. Related to this?

It's not SE's day! From Southern's web site just now, with just a hint of understatement in the last line:

"A fault with the electric third rail between Hastings and Eastbourne

Train services running between Eastbourne and Ashford International via Hastings are subject to delay alteration and cancellation.

The 13:50 Hastings to Charing Cross has stalled at St Leonards Warrior Square due to the train losing all the equipment that the train uses to make contact with the electric third rail which supplies the train with power to move.

There is currently a limited service between Eastbourne and Ashford International.

Buses are being mobilized to operate between Ashford International and Hastings and between Hastings and Eastbourne.

Brighton & Hove buses are accepting Southern tickets between Brighton and Eastbourne.

Southeastern are also affected by this problem."

Sorry do not know how to post direct link to Network Rails youtube page.
Take the characters at the end of the YouTube URL and put them between YouTube tags.

So if the video URL is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIbbfWMZnVY, then this: gives you this:

The left hand end of the broken piece has what appears to be a weld. The break looks quite straight, a fatigue crack?

Just noticed the caption on pic 5 in Evening Standard article

"Aftermath: One of the freight train's carriages lying on its side." Did that get past the editor ..? carriages on a freight train ? ..

Chances of freight being diverted via Medway Valley Line (again) while this is repaired - anyone?!

Disruption expected until End of service tomorrow at least with the following alterations:

The following stations will have no service:
Lee, Mottingham and New Eltham

A limited service will run between Sidcup and Dartford via Crayford

St Johns, New Cross & Hither Green stations will have a limited service

Services on the Hayes Line won’t be able to stop at Lewisham

Trains between Cannon Street and Orpington via Grove Park will not run, but trains will run to & from Charing Cross

Trains between Cannon Street and the Medway Towns will run from London Blackfriars in the morning & evening.

I don't think so. That was billed as between Hither Green and Crayford and it was repairs to the conductor rail. It seemed to be ok to finish the morning rush hour then shut for 5 hours and open again for the evening.

It's not fun living in Crayford at the moment.

Sorry folks, been away for a while.
Not visited all the links but where exactly was the derailment?
Commuted for years on the classic line from Ashford to London but cannot work out how this caused so much disruption.
Apologies if i've missed something obvious.

I wonder how feasible it would be to run a shuttle between Dartford and Orpington via the Lee freight loop so Sidcup line passengers could change at Grove Park?

The freight train was heading towards Lewisham platform 1 and derailed where the line splits from the mainline. It took out power and signalling over quite a wide area hence the severe lack of trains today.
