Last weekend's Tarka Line turbo (166204) failed on Sunday afternoon after going down to 1 engine so was swapped for 150265 at Exeter St Davids on 2B79 which continued for the rest of the day on that diagram with 166204 heading off to Taunton and Bristol in the evening as normal.

I’ve heard that 2 166s are expected to work around Exeter soon after the 143s are gone this weekend so would anyone be able to tell me if some could go onto Exmouth-Paignton or Barnstaple? Many thanks

Exmouth to Paignton is most likely

I’ve heard more 158s are due to work around Bristol again therefore freeing up two 166s to work down here.

A few extra HSTs replace 158s in Cornwall. Which then head to Bristol to release 2 166s and 2 165s from Portsmouth services.
These work Exmouth services replacing all of the 143s.

Why involve the 166s? It seems odd to move Sprinters out of Bristol for the Turbos only to swap out those Turbos for Sprinters?! Just stick the 158s on the Exmouth services?

158s are not preferred on the Exmouth branch due to the longer door cycles compared to 150s and Turbos. It’s seen as a performance risk.

Whereas they are perfect for Pompey-Cardiff (unlike the Turbos).........

We’ve done this to death before, in a world before Covid-19;

There aren’t physically enough 158s on GWR to operate Portsmouth to Cardiff as 5 car sets, however temporarily due to reduced demand a number of services can from December run as 4 car 158s.

Even if temporary, it is welcome to those of us who use the line every day for a long commute.

I was on a Bath to To Portsmouth train at 18:30 on the August Bank Holiday and it certainly wasn't quiet. Could have done with more carriages then. Whether that was unusual I don't know.

It's not unusual, though the trains aren't as busy as they were before. They used to be regularly full and standing if 3 coaches pre-COVID throughout most of the day. The busiest section of the line was probably Filton - Westbury. They still remain busy on weekends and bank holidays, however.

16x on Exmouth - Paigntons are probably a good idea, not only do the doors open faster, but the doors are also wider which will speed up boarding, especially with a stop every few minutes (particularly on the Exmouth branch).

Having spent the best part of a decade commuting on these into Paddington, it still seems odd to see Turbos by the seaside.

Is a 165 planned as well?
From what I’ve heard, Exeter TMD has 2 166’s now. One is used on Barnstaple <-> St James Park services. And the other is now used on Exmouth <-> Paignton services. This leaves 5 diagrams of double 150’s, which leaves one diagram left. I would expect another 166 to operate this, as a 166 can carry the same amount of people as a double 150.

A 166 already works Barnstaple services but only on Saturdays and Sundays

Interesting today that there was one on the Paignton/Exmouth circuit as posted above, none on the Barnstaple but one was around the back of the new depot in the same siding that most of the pacers are now dumped.

I know exactly what you mean. Before they ventured west, I think they were the class that stayed furthest from the sea, with perhaps one or two exceptions (but that’s another topic!)

I see today there is a Turbo running ECS to Pinhoe 5Z50 0804 Departs Exeter St Davids, then runs ECS Pinhoe to Goodrington

There is no longer any 16x booked for Barnstaple services, that has gone back to 158s 100% of the time except for the weekday late night service which is still booked for a 150.

One 16x is now booked on EXM <> PGN daily and the other one you said about being in the back of the depot is going to be a spare unit to be used for training.
