Intercity Fridays Only to/from Euston

I can’t say I’m surprised that the 86 isn’t doing it this week - it has only just come back from roughly a year over in the Freightliner depot having bogie work completed, and hasn’t ran any mainline tests yet. Putting it out this Friday would be pushing it somewhat.

The account was coy to another tweeter today, who asked if the 89 was going to be on it this Friday. "Not her time yet" was the reply, so whether it shows up next Friday or on a future tour will be interesting. I would not put it past them.

The 89 will be used on LSL tours. They put out a press release saying it will late last year but the chances of it being used next Friday will be in the region of 0% and I think it is far from certain, in fact very unlikely, the Friday Charter will continue after next week. As for the 86, if it is healthy enough I wouldn't be surprised if it was used on the 9th.

Shame but I’d heard the 89 had traction motor issues earlier this year so not surprised to hear that it’s still not ready. Has it ever had a revenue-earning run on the WCML? Don’t think I’ve seen any photos of it on the line that are later than 1988.

They wouldn’t put the 89 on it even if it was ready to go. It is a safe bet its first passenger working in 20 years will sell out so they wouldn’t use it first on a charter you can get a £10 part fare on.

I’ve got the impression from comments in the thread that it is possible just to turn up and buy a ticket on board. Is this correct? I’m considering travelling on this service this Friday from Crewe to Euston but am reluctant to buy a ticket in advance in case I’m late in arriving at Crewe and so miss the departure time.

It is possible to buy on board, yes.

86 101 was moving around light engine at Crewe earlier today - quite a few videos on Twitter - so is at least being tested.

Credit where credit's due.....the 87 and Mk3's recreate the loco hauled electric services so well. I will definitely try to travel on this, possibly outward returning home on Chiltern (also loco hauled).

Is the return journey included in the price?
All Intercity trips are return and this is included in the cost. We never offer a one-way service.

I also think it's amusing how they refer to a one-way service as if it's something bad that only disreputable operators would provide... it reminds me of packaging that says, for example, "We never add any artificial colours or sweeteners" !

I was once proud and excited that I could get on a reliable Virgin train for a reasonable price at my local station . Those days will come back. Let's not lose our heads with what is essentially a gimmick.

I don't want to see a Lumo type TOC on the WCML and think this is creeping uncomfortably towards it.

Oh the LSL press machine has been working overtime on it too. But it's nice to see they've stopped claiming they extensively refurbished those Mk3s - particularly after it was pointed out to them recently on Twitter and other social media forms they are exactly as they were on GA but with pretty pictures and new Antimacassers. It's a novelty and I really don't expect it to last for much longer - other than enthusiasts, it hasn't exactly set the world on fire and it has just felt like LSL needing to find a use for their IC Mk3s from the start (not helped that, since the Staycation, they haven't really exactly either turned a wheel in anger or had that much in the way of passenger loadings).

Strange how times change. Some of us spent many years trying to avoid 86s on the WCML!

Mind, there was a consolation when the Can turned out to be an 86/1.

They'd need to fetch one of the Roarers out of Barrow Hill for me to contemplate shelling out for a trip.

Why wouldn't you want an OA on WCML like Lumo?
