The Autotransfomer system Distributes at +/- 25kV the OLE is standard 25kV so the systems feeds the contact OLE as normal

I'm guessing that the section cabin at Lostock Junction breaks the feed from the WCML on both lines or does the Chorley route have another feed in somewhere?

It’s fed from Ordsall Lane which in itself is fed from Hetrod via the Lkng expansion lead

Ahhh I had forgotten about that one. So does Ordsall Lane do the full Bolton route up towards the junction at the WCML?

Oh so is Lostock-Wigan using an autotransformer system? If not how do AT systems deal with feeding a branch that is not using ATF. Is it that the branch to Wigan will only be fed by the Autotransformer at Lostock SATS and therefore not carry a -25kv wire because there are no more autotransformers (sectioning, midpoint or standalone) on the way to Wigan?
Manchester-Euxton Jn is AT fitted, but I don't think Lostock-Wigan will be.
The Chat Moss route is AT, but Huyton-Springs Branch isn't.

Don't they know it's bad to have an extension lead on an extension lead?

I'll see myself out. On a serious note, shame a out the theft and hope it hasn't delayed the love date too much.

Indeed, it has not
People living near the railway and passengers travelling between Wigan and Bolton are being warned that newly-installed 25,000-volt electric power lines are now permanently live.

This morning (Wednesday 1 January) Network Rail and its contractors* carried out final tests on the high-voltage cables which have been installed over the last two years along the six mile stretch of railway.

After the tests, specialist electrical engineers then powered up the cables and they are now turned on 24 hours a day.

Steady on! probably wont see any electric passenger services for several months while they do live testing. Manchester-Stalybridge went new years day 2024 and only got used in service for the first time a month ago

Indeed....

Perhaps the bigger question - why on earth does it take 6+ months to complete live testing?

Depends what's found when the testing is done, when the pair of 331s went to Stalybridge there were a few issues found that needed rectifying, hence why it took until August before 769s could run with the pan up. (7th August is when I worked my first electric 769 to Staly)

i have no idea but I'd assume the automatic power changeover system for the TPE trains would have taken some time to install and test as well - which I guess is why TPE only ran electric there from last month

Presumably they have to find some access as well, perhaps at late notice and then get everyone to be there for the testing. Lots of ducks to get into a row.

All good points but it still feels like it could/should be much quicker. The "go live" date should have been known weeks/months beforehand, giving plenty of time for planning the testing.

I'm pretty sure they will have it ready to go on May 17th, when the new timetable comes into effect. I've not seen any test trains yet through Hindley. Does anyone know when these will start running?

Just a matter of time and wonder if Mentor will be involved?

I might have missed it but I don't think mentor is used that much in the first tests so to speak these days as that is now able to be done with units fitted with equipment on behalf of Network Rail like the 331s and 397s of TPE.

You can be fairly sure as far as Northern goes the test will use a 331 on 5 Z * * headcode.

Have any electric test trains operated on the line yet?

I've been keeping an occasional eye on RTT for any clues, but seen nothing so far. It's a good few weeks now since the section went live.

From what I'm hearing the rail replacement buses will finish from the May timetable change. Also some Northern staff I've spoken to don't reckon they'll be doing 769 power changeover at Ince. Keeping it to Bolton as it is now.

Are the 769s still due to be moved on in December?

A Wigan based Northern conductor I asked said he’d been told they power changeover is being moved to Hindley soon.
