DOO on Northern and general discussion on future staffing arrangements

So do you think Guards are underpaid ?

Did the decent salary and quality rest periods have anything to do with it ?

Moonshot, what attracted you to working on the Railway ?

DOO on Northern and general discussion on future staffing arrangements

I would say by the end of the next franchise ( 2024-2026) Guards will be gone more or less on the Northern franchise, once the 15x and 14x stock is life expired I think the traditional role of Guard will be finished, sadly.

DOO on Northern and general discussion on future staffing arrangements

There is a simple solution as far as unpopular union reps are concerned, vote them out at the next election ! As for diagrams, as long as they are legal in terms of complying with CRI (Northern), the reps cannot reject them. The fatuige index is a tool that is useful, but reps have had no...

DOO on Northern and general discussion on future staffing arrangements

What would it cost to convert the entire Northern Rail network to DOO ? Could it be done with existing traction, 15x class in particular. What improvement would need to be made to the stations. Would any new scheme require CCTV or would platform end mirrors be allowed. How much would Aslef...

DOO on Northern and general discussion on future staffing arrangements

Excellent points JC, at our depot, the compliment is 56, in the last year I would say 10 new Guards have been employed, which is turnover of roughly 20%. I suppose the trade off will be something like no redundancy and maybe allow the Drivers to release doors on non DOO routes as a guarantee...

DOO on Northern and general discussion on future staffing arrangements

I'm glad were back to reality, after talking about things which aren't impossible. In reality the cost of getting the Northern network fully DOO would be exhorbitant, however I agree a few routes will more than likely be converted. It will be a very long time before we see a full network...

DOO on Northern and general discussion on future staffing arrangements

I agree, but it was you that started talking about things not being impossible. If money was no object, Drivers could be got rid of as well.

DOO on Northern and general discussion on future staffing arrangements

Why would all the network need to be 100 mph, it isn't now. The Dubai metro has no problems attracting passengers and that runs at around 90 kph I think.

DOO on Northern and general discussion on future staffing arrangements

It would not be impossible to have driverless trains included in the new prospectus, but it would cost the earth. As for going DOO on the Northern network, how soon is now ? Ok some routes like Chat Moss may be less problematic to convert, but to move wholesale across the Network would also...

DOO on Northern and general discussion on future staffing arrangements

I was under the impression that any new or future DOO schemes had to be operated by in cab monitor or CCTV cameras ? An outgoing Northernrail director told me only two weeks ago that DOO was years away on the Northern Network.

Rail in the North Group report

Have the Doo scotrail services been retrospectively fitted with cctv and in cab monitors so that drivers can operate the doors. While this may pay if you are going to have units for 10 or 20 years plus, would it be cost effective on units that only have a shelflife of around 10 years left ?

Rail in the North Group report

How realistic is it for the North to be D00 by 2019 though, the report mentions that sprinters should be phased out by 2024 but surely it is not worth the cost of converting stock too Doo if the stock is only going to be around for 5 years after conversion. Would it not be more cost effective to...

    Driver Only Operated Trains

So in theory, how long would it take or more to the point cost,to implement doo on the northern rail network, and what kind of franchise length would be needed to make this viable.

    Northern rail strike ?

Its best to look at this in a pragmatic sort of way,the Toc wants to use agency staff as they will lower costs, these savings will go directly to shareholders and would not be used to provide cheaper fares or provide any sort of service improvements. The unions job is to protect its members and...

    Northern rail strike ?

Anyone heard that the Rmt are to ballot northern rail staff for industrial action over the use of agency staff on their network ?
