    Avanti standard premium

Can anyone confirm the price of an on train upgrade to standard premium from Brum to Euston (the ticket was booked through work so no way of upgrading at the booking stage)? The Avanti website gives contradictory information depending where you look and their live chat is useless.

Why did BR not electrify Mitre Bridge Junction to Kensington Olympia?

Prompted by posts in the motorail thread, when the decision was taken for Kensington Olympia to become London's motorail hub, why was the 2 miles or so from there to Mitre Bridge Junction not electrified, saving the need for loco changes for such a short distance? Bear in mind this was in the...

When did metric start to be taught in British schools?

Does anyone happen to know what year the metric system started to be taught as standard at all British schools?

Avanti - partial refund when standard premium not available?

Yesterday I travelled from Sandwell and Dudley to Euston, I had booked an advance ticket on the 7.55 departure in Standard Premium Class. This train was cancelled however so I hopped onto the next stopper to New Street and caught the preceeding service to Euston. This issue is this service was...

    Princes End branch (Black Country)

Does anyone have any information, memories or photos of this branch, and the freight services which used it, in it's final years from the mid 70s until closure in 1981? There's some interesting info on the Bescotplus site but I'm curious what else is out there, especially interested to hear...

80s railtour from Birmingham to HoW line - information request

I've only ever been on one railtour in my life, with my parents back in the 80s, probably 1985-88ish. Just curious if anyone else here was on the same trip and remembers more details than I. This is about all I can remember: Rolling stock was a heritage DMU, haven't a clue what class It...

Why did the 1987 rebuild of Birmingham Snow Hill have such long platform?

One oddity of the current Snow Hill station is the fact the platforms look capable of accommodating 12 coach trains, far in excess of what's ever been required, this has been the case since re-opening back in 1987. Does anyone know what BR's thinking was behind this decision? The only 2...

    Sutton Park line

One of the most commonly suggested line re-openings is the Sutton Park line, but where I think it falls down is at the eastern end where there are generally 3 suggestions, Water Orton/Coleshill which both have a limited potential market and connection opportunities, or New Street, which would be...

Trivia: Routes which are TOC enclaves or exclaves

The Romford to Upminster branch is operated by London Overground but is completely isolated from the rest of their network, no LO services connecting either station to any other LO operated route. Since privatisation have there ever been any other routes in Britain (excluding the IoW) which...

    Class 67 at Euston

There's currently a Colas 67 (027 I think) sat light engine at Euston platform 16, any idea what it's doing here?

    Pendolino full reset??

I'm currently sat in a Pendo in New Street and heard an announcement I've never encountered before, "It's necessary to perform a full reseet before the train can proceed" (or words to that effect) internal lights went out for a couple of minutes and we're now powered up again. Just curious as...

TRIVIA - Earliest time for a station car park to fill up

I arrived at Sandwell and Dudley at 7:05 today to find the car park completely full. Just wondered if there are many other station car parks which fill up similarly early.

    HST at Euston??

Just left Euston and I could have sworn I caught a glimpse of a HST sitting in one of the low numbered platforms. Was there one booked to be there (the NMT maybe) or did I imagine it?

    Bescot station parking

Are there any regular users of Bescot station who can tell me what time of morning the car park tends to fill up on a weekday, ie if I arrive at 8am are there likely to still be spaces available?

Steam loco on the M5 today

I caught a brief glimpse of a steam loco on the back of a low loader heading south between J1 and J2 of the M5 today. It was a tender loco, I'm not 100% sure but I think it had a GWR copper capped chimney. Dopes anyone know the identity of said loco and where it was heading from/to?

TRIVIA - current stations which were originally two separate stations

How many of these can we name? I'm thinking purely of stations which were initially built and operated as 2 (or more) separate stations by different railway companies. Stations which were served by multiple companies but designed from the outset to operate as a single station (eg Carlisle...

    Early electrification scheme remnants

Prompted by the interesting thread below about the LBSC's 6600V AC electrification scheme: http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=152911 What evidence remains today of the infrastructure associated with the various defunct early (pre WW2) electrification schemes, eg the aforementioned...

    Reversed Pendolino

This a first for me, I'm currently on a Pendolino travelling with standard class at the London end. Does anyone know why it could have been turned, have there been any operational issues the past few days which necessitated it?
