    101 observation conversions

Got thinking about the 101 which is as converted to an observation car and used on the Kyle line. Was this adapted to have heating from the loco, as even in Summer can be rather chilly sometimes in the highlands

NRM York - Toffee Apple (31018) missing details from its livery?

Just visited the NRM at York, looking at 31.018 I keep see something was missing , the Red Circle coupling codes on the cabs. Then looked at D8000 and D200 and noticed these lacked the blue star coupling codes on the cabs as well. Small but important detail

Push pull27’s&47’ s. No buckeye why

When the 27’s and 47’s were converted for push pull why were they not fitted with Buckeye couplers and rubbing plates like the 33/1’s were when converted. Likewise why were 86’s and 87’s not fitted ?

    Half cabs and modern ticketing.

In the 60’s and 70’s it was confirmed that front engined half cabs were cheaper to operate mechanically than rear engined models but were unsuitable for OPO. Now with pre paid fares could we imagine for the return of front engined half cabs which provide drivers with security? Many European...

    33/1’s in multiple

Whilst not overly common it did happen for 2x33/1’s to operate in multiple. Question did they use the blue star multiple coupling or the SR high level couplings.

London Transport - New Cross allocation and use late 1970's

In late 70's early 80's London Transport decreed that buses allocated to a garage could be used on route they were cleared for, for example SF using DM's on 253 and EM using DM's on 279. Got me thinking can never remember seeing an MD on the 141 or a DM on 53. Neither can I remember prior to...

Which production model and body had most rattles

Ok wondering what model chassis and body had the most rattles making for an uncomfortable journey. Not looking at individual vehicles or garage allocations. For me had to be the LT DMS, regardless of Park Royal or MCW, everything rattled even window frames and made worse by the AFC ( usually...

Number of companies present and pre privatisation

How many companies are there running our bus services now as compared to pre privatisation. If we class the Scottish Bus Group and National as 2 companies. Then take National express arriva etc as single companies are there more or less post privatisation

Largest station at end of a solo single line

I remember the original Oban station which had ( I believe ) 5platforms. Got me thinking what was the station with most platforms at the end a solo single line. I can ignore Inverness as 3 separate lines terminated, FortWilliam ( before resisting and rebuilding) had 2 lines. , Newquay also had 2...

    73's Blue Star

The 73's as built were capable to work (in diesel mode) with other Blue Star fitted classes. Seen occasional photos with 33's but was wondering if anyone has knowledge of them working with other diesel classes.

    Class 29

Always been interested in The NBL diesels especially the 21’s and 29’s. The trial batch up to 6109 had Orange circle multiple working and the products had blue star, it was always rumoured that some production had orange star. When rebuilt why were they fitted with Orange star and not blue star...

    Sofia Tram line 10

Currently sitting enjoying a journey on Sofia tram number 10 to Vitinho. For me this has to be the finest and most diverse tram. Within the space of 10 mins you have city centre, forest and suburbs, and this on a traditional high floor tram. To anyone thinking of visiting Sofia I can recommend...

    Vectrons Bulgaria

Just returned from trip to Sofia in Bulgaria and decided to have a day trip to Plovdiv. Have done this many times behind the Skodas and ex DB compartment stock and always enjoyed. However this time to my surprise I noticed at Sofia there was a new Vectron on the front but still the old rolling...

    Hypothetical question regarding FRM project

Hypothetical post, if the FRM (rear-engined Routemaster) project had continued and London had got a large production batch, would this have speeded up the conversion to one-person operation (OPO)? Also, would there have been a single deck variant instead of the Swifts and Merlins. All...

    1st Gen DMU refurbs

Always wondered how BR decided which 1st gen DMU classes to refurb. Can understand the 101,s and 108,s but always wondered why the 118’s were not refurb as they were very similar to 1178's which were refurbished and had a long life. Cant be that it was a small fleet as the 114’s were refurb and...
