Currently (07:56) trundling up Drake Street on the way to a day's toil. 3141 is a reasonable start to the day...

A good day for my red pen on the BLS Lackenby Looper tour, must be a good few years since I scored 7 locos plus an industrial loco on one tour!

10/7:
801212 (Doncaster - London Kings Cross)

Always nice to get a required unit on a booked move :)

15/7:
Blue Pen
153910 (As a 153/9) [Chester - Wrexham General, bit of a time wasting spin to Wrexham as the next Crewe train got cancelled)

16/7:
397008 (Manchester Piccadilly - Manchester Airport) Class Cleared :)
769450 (Manchester Piccadilly - Alderley Edge) [Just leaves 769431 for the Northern 769s, however I suspect it's broken at the moment]

The North? Coventry, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, etc? That's the South....or, at the very least, the Midlands! ;)
I had a feeling that might provoke a reaction!

I definitely went north of Watford and as far as Stone in Staffordshire, which is scary for a southerner but I agree it's not really the true North.

22/7:

345041 (Paddington - Hayes & Harlington)

Cleared for mileage:

345019
345060 (All 345s cleared for ten miles :D)
376005
376014
395028 (Last 395 needed for ten miles, won't be rushing to pay the Oyster rate between Stratford & St Pancras again in a hurry!)
465917
465922
466013
700013 (A nice bonus of an sub mile 8 coach unit popping up on a Three Bridges service, the fast run to East Croydon is better than a crawl round South London!)

South Eastern mileage needs now are 2x 376s, 2x 465/9s (plus 1x 465/2 if it returns) & 3x 466s (plus another 466 in storage if it ever returns). Coming down nicely, could have had another 376 if I had been quicker on my feet at Grove Park.

23/7:

60066

From the UK Railtours tour towards Boulby, had the 66 back in Sept 2013 when it 'rescued' a steam engine, and 67007 I've had for nearly a thousand miles now. However for those track tours the track is the main event, required locos are a bonus in my book.

24/7:

230003 (Stewartby - Kempston Hardwick - Fenny Stratford)

[Fancied the novelty factor of a Sunday service on the Marston Vale line, Kempston Hardwick is very much a nothing station]

Ah, ok. I managed 27 as 7s but I think I missed a handful more. I've no data on the complete list.
The complete list is 32 345s as 7s, that is 345003/05-17/20/22/29/38-40/42/44/47/49/51/52/55-57/59/63/64.

I had all 32 as 7s before the end of 2019 (last two on 31 December 2019) but, although I have travelled on all 70 345s, I have only had 14 of the conversions as 9s - I still need 345003/06-08/12/14-17/22/29/38/42/47/49/56/57/64 as 9-cars but haven't given it any particular attention as a haulage requirement.

I still don't see why people are awfully concerned about 7 and 9 car 345s. Everyone's rules are different, yes, but I just can't see the logic.

The two extra cars in the 9-cars are motor cars so can understand why some might want to have them as 9s.

Logic with train spotting? That‘s a perfect oxymoron.
I certainly wouldn’t chase (for haulage again) a TfW non PRM 153 dogbox just because they changed one sticky digit on it. Some do, but my rules won’t stretch that far.

I guess there's some logic there. Certainly not something I'm into, obviously, but fair game. If the 345s had been renumbered with the addition of more coaches, then I'd understand better. No judgement or anything, just trying to understand why it would be such a significant thing.

There's logic of various twists and forms in all aspects of the hobby, it just depends how we look at it I guess.

I said the same with the TfW 153/9s, but I soon changed my mind and went on a relentless quest to get them. Same with the XC 170s with their reforms, a case of do them if it's convenient but I went on an all-out mission to do them ASAP!

To my mind, renumbering a train means getting it again with the new number. I'm not sure why it makes sense to me, I've long ago lost interest in figuring out my own rules, which are a little bit flexible and prone to being changed/abandoned/whatever with little to no notice! I have plenty of previous form for that!

To me, doing the 345s as 7 car trains then again as 9 car trains makes as much sense as if I had recorded my HST journeys with notes on whether it had 7, 8 or 9 coaches in between the power cars. Which makes no sense, there's no difference in the mileage had or whatever so I'm a bit lost. I'm just trying to understand what makes someone's brain tick with the same hobby but different desires. I'm just curious I guess!

I'm very much a "It's the same train" kind of person. I don't go out and get the same train again just because it's been renumbered or had coaches added, but honestly good on those who do, if that's what they like.

Something like the 319 -> 769 project is different though, because the change between EMU and DMU/BIMU is so large it is quite clearly a different train at the end of it.

I find it fascinating to know what rules each person sets for themselves :D

What is most annoying, sat on 153914 this morning, is that the 1539xx units are unmodified, with the remaining 1533xx units the ones fitted with the universal toilets, so if anything, the TfW 1533xx units are more worthy of chasing again.

So going for 1539xx units is purely about numbers, which is a bit annoying. I did think I would avoid them all but changed my mind this morning, spurning 153327.

Fortunately, by some luck, according to my notes I've had all the /9s as /3s in the past so I don't feel the compulsion to get them as /3s again :D

It's had some fun moments with the chase of the /9s, which I believe started with getting one attached to a 150, following a chance observation of a 3 car train when cycling up that way last year. It's a little strange getting a 153/9, in EMT colours with FGW interior, on the Heart of Wales!

I always advocate (to those who do units for haulage) that you should do it by vehicle number, rather than set number. By this approach, if you have had a seven car set which then becomes a nine car, there are two vehicles that have not been part of a train you have travelled on.

Being fully hard core, you should make nine journeys, one in each vehicle, to get them all for 'ridage'.

It's much easier just doing locos!
