The first few Renatus 321s to head for scrap went via Wolverton Works, possibly for some parts removal but nothing was obviously missing from the outside at least. All the rest have gone straight to Newport Docks from storage...I too am struck too by the expense and complexity of the Renatus project, only for the units to go to the shredder a few years later. Surely a lighter refurb (or even none at all) would have been sufficient given the short time left for them on the GEML? I don’t suppose any of the new traction equipment, aircon, WiFi equipment etc was salvaged for re use?
You need to look at the relative timescales of the Renatus project and Class 720 order. The 720s were ordered around August 2016. The first Renatus set was released in December 2016, but obviously contracts for the refurbishment were placed well before then i.e. before the 720s were ordered. Does it matter? It is money that got Greater Anglia customers better trains for around five years, and saw them meet their accessibility requirements. One of the benefits of leasing is that it is Eversholt who have borne the loss, and not the railway.How much did the Renatus project cost?
