The simple expediant of giving them a run somewhere, even if it is just to Norwich and back will cost money ! Who would do the work and who would pay, everything costs a lot of dosh nowadays, so without a firm "end-game", what is the point ?

But it is perfectly feasible for the work to be done - four long-stored ex-LNER power cars were returned to operational condition earlier this year.

If there’s no end game why are they not being scrapped and instead being moved into a purpose built shed though?

Is the shed being purpose built specifically for the Class 43s that are there? I’ve not seen any mention of that.

If so, maybe they are being stripped for parts to be sent to Nigeria and Mexico and are wanting to do that undercover?

So they can paint them undercover?, (and any other stock that needs re-painting too)
I thought the shed was for ERS to paint their own stock instead of doing it outside
I'm pretty sure that in a Rail Express article about Romic a few months back, it was them that were at the forefront of the building of a shed for the storage of their stock

As also mentioned in the Rail Adventure thread, 43160 & 43162 have left Devon today bound for storage soon the Mid Norfolk Railway (Romic).

TF 41161 has left Reid's yard for LSL Crewe, while Reid has also put TRFB 40807 up for sale. Both originally destined for Pitlochry.

Presumably, both of these have lost their names?

Hi all

Sun Chariot kindly directed me to this thread.

I was in Penzance the weekend before last and a friend and I wanted to take a quick ride to Truro and back on a Class 43-hauled 'Castle' train, just so we could have 1 last ride before they get taken out of service which I am told is 'early next year' (but it's already been postponed once or twice eg www.modernrailways.com/article/gwr-castle-hsts-go-december-2023).

But, with Storm Darragh wreaking its worst, everything in and out of Pz was cancelled for the Sat and Sun and I had to be back in London the following Monday AM. Not due back in Pz till Jan at the very earliest.

Does anyone know when next year the 43s will be withdrawn on this bit of the GWR, please?

Cheers

Mark

Going off this video taken recently of Great Yarmouth Sdgs, 43029 and 43206 (43006) appear have been stripped heavily for spares:

Stripped and unsurprisingly to those who knew it from the start, soon to end up in the bin (sorry to burst the bubble of those who keep saying 006 + 112 should be saved because of it's paint job!). But they are both providing a valuable amount of spares to keep predominantly the export fleet going.

43006/029 have since been shunted out ready for one way road transport.
43112 is operational along with all the other remaining Power Cars on site.

Apologies if I have missed it - I take it that, since after 2021, LSL has sold 006 and 112?

I don't think LSL have ever owned those power cars.

LSL never owned them - reports that LSL had acquired them were “fake news”. They were bought by Romic in January last year.

It should also be noted that they are officially 43206/312, too.

Thank you for clarifying on both points.

I believe that came from a combination of a misreport in an online magazine article at the time (which actually meant to talk about LSLs Blue Pullman Power Cars) and the usual platform end wibble about how everything should be saved because of its fancy paint job (despite the fact as we know, that set was chose because it was due an overhaul and has no long term future signed up for it).

The process of cutting up 43161 at Marsh Mills has begun, while heavily stripped 006 & 029 have been moved around Great Yarmouth in preparation for their trip to the scrapyard as well.

Before the usual comments are made, 161 has benefitted a number of PCs in the process since its retirement.

43029 departed Great Yarmouth today by road for further final component recovery. It has been taken to the Mid Norfolk where it will donate its bogies and more.

Surely the shipping cost to Mexico far outweighs the part? Surely 7's damaged valance will be repaired with fibreglass weave?
Depends on how much they want to pay, and how quickly they want it. I wouldn’t put it past ROMIC already having a container full of spares somewhere on the high seas making its way to Mexico.

Either that or they’ll just ship the next lot of spares out with the next Power Car / Mk3 delivery.

Exactly - you wouldn't send the valance out on its own, it would go with the next lot of spares. At some point big components such as engines, bogies and cooler groups will be needed - so you send a load of spares together.
