No. Although Maria Bueno did win four times in the late 1950's / early 1960's, Brazilian isn't the nationality we're looking for.Brazil
It was Maria Buenos I was thinking of, thought that would have been a good guess.No. Although Maria Bueno did win four times in the late 1950's / early 1960's, Brazilian isn't the nationality we're looking for.
Although Gabriela Sabatini won the US Open in 1990, Argentinian isn't the correct answer.I will stay in South America and make a total guess at Argentina
Flavia Pennetta won in 2015, but the answer is not Italian and the correct answer (nationality) does indeed relate to a US Open singles winner dating back to some time ago.I will try Italy.
Not correct since (unlike the men's competition) I don't believe there's ever been a Swedish women's winner of the US Open, however, geographically speaking, you're not a million miles away from the right answer!Sweden?

Mexican? (Still close to America)
South African?
Game, set and match! We have a winner.Norwegian?
Yes indeed, won the FA Cup in 1875, then the Amateur Cup in 1908 choosing not to go professional in the 1880's along with most of the clubs we know today. Incidentally @Spamcan81, Middlesbrough won the Amateur Cup twice in the 1890's, when they reverted from professionalism to amateurism for 10 years. One more to find. How about the Royal Engineers? They were big in sport back in the day?
Afraid not.Old Etonians?
Not them either.Old Harrovians
